Just a question, I was wondering if it's possible to change out the oil pump without taking the engine out? I would imagine that you would have to take the engine mounts loose but is that all that would need to be done. Thanks

I did it, its not fun

I had to disconnect the mounts from the crossmember and jack the front of the motor up, I think I took the driveshaft and H pipe out also, it might just be easier to pull the motor if you have the means.....

It's a lot more than just loosening the engine mounts, you'll have to raise it at least a foot to get enough room for the pan to clear the k member. It'd be a lot easier to just pull the engine out, if you did you'll be done in half the time instead of rolling around on your back, squeezing your hand into tight areas to take the pan bolts out, all at an awkward position. To raise it that far means loosening the trans mount, taking the headers off of the mid pipe, and stretching the hoses, wires, and lines to their limits. Then when you're putting it back, you'll have all those little pan bolts that won't go right in due to the new pan gasket which won't stay in place, and you won't be able to see the holes to line them up either. I've done this before with it in the car, take our advice and just pull the engine out, switch pumps, then put it back in. Save yourself the agony we went through.

I had to do that with my cousins 83 gt and that was the biggest bugger ever i didnt have a hoist so we had to do it with the engine in had to use blocks of wood on the jack to get the engine high enough it took me about 5 hours to ge it done. Just rent yourself a hoist if you dont have one and pull the engine.

I agree I did it in my 90 gt with aod. I believe an aod makes it even more difficult because I dont believe the engine can be jacked up quite as high.

Here are the steps that I did. I may be missing one or two. When I did it my radiator was out along with my upper intake manifold off (unrelated to the oil pump)

1. drain oil
2. put car on jackstands
3. place jack under oil pan with a block of wood between jack and pan
4. loosen engine mounts and transmission mount
5. slowly jack engine up making sure that I didn't pinch any lines and stopped when the transmission touched the body.
6. Place a block of wood between the motor mounts and engine
7. Lower engine back onto blocks of wood (I only had room for a 2x4 on one side and a 2x4 plus a 1x4 on the other)
8. Remove jack
9. Took the aluminum cover off the lower bell housing (4 bolts)
10 Unbolted oil pan and lowered it.
****Oil pan was just lowered still stuck in*****
11. Unbolted oil pump, and the pick up tube (let em fall in the pan)
12. Tried to remove it. FAILED Misserably
13. Unbolted steering rack and pushed it forward off the pins and pulled it down
14. Was able to remove the oil pan.
**** from here it was equally bad***

15 clean pan and pickup tube
16 put new pump in pan along with pickup tube
17 put pan back in place

At this point I just did everything backwards.

I will never do it again with it in the vehicle

I may have missed a step here or there. If you have a Haynes Manual it has all the steps. Crappy illustrations, but if you know what they are referring to you dont need pictures. If this is your daily driver I would consider taking it to a shop and paying someone to do it just in case you get stuck.

Hope this helped.

Aaron

Ps next time I will probably pay someone to do it.

In all it took me 3 hours, but here is the big but, I had only the short block in connected to the transmission. The only accessories on the motor was the water pump (power steering and a/c compressor were already removed). Basically I was stupid for not pulling the motor, especially with a picker right next to the car.

If this is your first time with help I would expect it to take the better part of the day and you and your helper will probably get into a fight after hearing, "Maybe if you try>>>>>>" too many times.
