Check engine light

1227 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  spazzyfry123
My "96 GT has had a lot of stuff done to it. Exhaust replaced (have the old stock unit in shed) O2 sensors removed, different supercharger. Check engine light is on most of the time, but she runs perfectly. Should I worry? Is there a way to reprogram the computer?

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

yuor engine light will stay on most because you have the O2 sensors are removed...

I would put the o2 sensors back if i were you...well at least the front 2. The back 2 are just to check if the cats are working and if u have offroad exhaust u can have them turned off in a tune or use mils. The front 2 are vital for the air/fuel ratio which affects the car big time. Even tho the car runs fine it still may be a tad lean/tan rich which can cause either engine problems or horsepower. Id put the 02 sensors back and scan the car for the check engine light. Yes u could ignore it but if its because the 02 sensors and the CEL is always on, how will u know if something elses goes wrong that u really need to know about but u never see it cuz the CEL is always lit? Just my opinion.
Thanks MB!

Is there going to be ports for them in my new custom exhaust? Is that something I can take to a muffler shop to get added? I have a video of the previous owner pulling a 14.33 at the Woodburn drags (Oregon).

~ THANKS you two. I do want to know when something else goes wrong....

By the way, does everybody here use an alias? I like first names:)

Autozone will scan error codes for free.... beats shelling out money for a reader or paying someone else to do it.

Any aftermarket midpipe like my x pipe should have the bung holes for the 02 sensors allready. I am sure an exhaust could do it, but be simpler to buy an aftermarket pipe with it allready. My mac x pipe had the holes ready to go. Ohh name is Brandon
Thanks Brandon!

I'll take in in to my local shop on Monday. I want my CEL working properly

~Maybe I'll shimmy under there and see if there are bungs myself:winks

Thanks,

Arn
Couldn't you just run up to Autozone or something like that and get the code cleared for free and not have to worry about all this? I personally have a friend that has one of those things and when I get my offroad pipe, I was planning on just having him run his machine on it and clearing the code. Please correct me if I am wrong, because I was not planning on buying the MIL things:sterb:

You can clear it but it will come right back on because the computer will still detect a problem. You have to trick the computers with mils or turn the rear o2s off completely with a tune.
Damn...Thanks for the heads up!:dunce:
