I have a 1968 Mustang coupe. I'm putting a 1999 ford 302 block in it. The car was an automatic. The motor will be producing 300hp. I am looking to put in a 5 or 6 speed manual transmission, on a budget. I found some sites with the history and terchnical information on the WC and NWC T5, T56, TKO etc. and want to know what to stay away from, how can I tell if the tranmission came from a V8. Will it match up to my application. There were just so many different models made over the years.

most of the 6spd are for mod motors, yes they can be adapted but that rarely falls under "budget"...look for a 80s-93 T5 from a Mustang GT, they are plentiful on ebay and such

I've got a new HD T-5 from jegs that I bought a year ago and I've barely driven the car and have never launched from anything under a 20mph roll and its already whining. I only make 298HP/327TQ, I wanted a TKO but my tailshaft seal went out and bombed my stock T-5 so I needed something in a hurry. I'm just hoping it lasts until I get this thing boosted so I can roast it and upgrade.

Long story short....T-5's are crap with anything near 300hp. What about an auto with a nice hard shifting shift kit?

Look into the 3350 they are a pretty stout tranny. My cousin has a fox with a mild 302 pushing 320HP and 330 something torque and he power shifts the crap out of it and i mean he really beats on it and its holds up quite nice.

Honestly what you want to do is to get a normal T5 WC and rebuild it or have it rebuilt with Astro gear set or look at the Astro website for some of their rebuilds that are beefed up.

I agree. I would definitely use a fox input shaft length/bearing retainer/bell housing. That said, Astro and G-Force transmissions make some very heavy duty T5s.

I am in the market too. Called up Astro to get a tranny and they are out, or on backorder. They should have more by the holidays he said. Meanwhile I found a used TKO600, clutch, pressure plate, bellhousing, aluminum driveshaft, crossmember, and moser 31 spline axles for $2000
