This may be an amatuer question, but I was wondering if it would be okay to clean all the oil and sludge of my bare block by using a pressure washer. I'm going to have it hot tanked, but I jsut want to get the thick stuff off. You guys would probably know best.

perfectly fine thats what i did with my engine when i rebuilt it. Be sure to use some degreaser though that water won't really cut through the oil.

Its always good to keep the engine free from oil and sludge buildup

It's fine. If you were using it on an engine that's not coming out, then you'd have to make sure all electricals are protected.

But if you're going to hot tank it, why worry about cleaning it before it gets cleaned? That's like washing the car before you go to the car wash.
