I bought a 2008 Mustang GT with the TR3650 Trans. The car has a problem shifting when it has sat over night first thing in the morning. Shifts from first to second and third to fourth feel like you are shifting without pushing in the clutch and the synchros are bad. If you shift real slow, say like five seconds or so to pull the shift lever from first to second, it seems to shift OK. Trying to shift it normally or briskly, not even at a speed you would use in a race, produces the offending clashing feel in the shift lever. The shift from second to third will often times lock out on you unless are are perfect. When this happens you have to pull it back into second and then it will go into third. I personally drained the transmission fluid and replaced it with exactly 3.2 qts of Mercon V. I drove the car over three hundred miles after changing the fluid, but it still acted the same as before the fluid was changed. The clutch engages and the car starts to move when the peddle is just about fully released. The car will begin to move slowly and then lurch in the last quarter inch of final clutch pedal movement. When the car sits in the parking lot on a hot day, after work it does not exhibit the same symptoms as it does when it is about 70 degrees or cooler in the morning. Daytime temps have been averaging over ninety five degrees.

I took the car into the Ford Dealership, and naturally the car had been driven. So when the Dealership test drove the car in the afternoon, they said they could find no problems with it shifting. It is a hard shift even when the trans fluid is warm. If you try to pull a fast shift you feel it snap into gear like a snapping of a light switch. It is not smooth like butter in any sense of the word. I have spoken to other GT owners locally, one with a 2007 and the other with a 2003. They both said they can shift as fast as they want and it is very smooth with no synchro problems when their trans fluid is cold in the morning. The 2003 is a Roush Mustang and he said he thinks all my problems are clutch related. That the clutch is not releasing and spinning down fast enough, which is why a very slow granny shift causes no problems. The Dealer has kept the car overnight and will drive it in the morning. If they wait till it is hot, I am sure they will say there is no problem again. The man who owns the Roush is a mechanic, and if the Dealer gives me the car back unfixed, I am paying him to drive my car and do a clutch and transmission diagnosis that I can take back to the Dealership and also give to the Ford Area Service Rep.

The car had about 20500 miles on it when I bought it and it now has 21735 , miles on it. I found out from the Dealer AFTER I signed over my 2007 V6 Mustang Convertible and signed the papers for this car, that the car I bought had been a lease car. My trade in had 35000 miles on it and the driver's side floor mat was in almost perfect shape, the driver's mat in this car has the nap all worn away in about a 2 1/2 inch circle by the accelerator pedal. We all know how people treat and drive rental and lease cars. If I had known before signing I would not have bought it. The Dealer hadn't even bothered to change the oil, as I changed it the other day and it was as black as the paint on my the exterior of my car. The sticker called for the oil being due to be changed THIS month.

So.. any thoughts if my problems are clutch, transmission or both and possible thoughts on how to handle this with the dealer. This car cost me over 26000 dollars and will be more like 33000 when it is paid off. If it had only cost me 8000 dollars, hect, I would have a new clutch put in and the trans rebuilt. I think this dealer needs to wake up and fix the problem.

Thanks to any help or replies members of this forum can give me.... I know the Dealer seems to have hosed me.. but I need to get this problem resolved before the winter when I am told shifing will be near impossible.

I had a 2001 SVT Cobra with the same POS tranny in it. It's a common problem with them. Everything you are saying is happening to your trans when you try to shift it is EXACTLY what happened to me. Now remember these tranny's aren't rated for much horsepower. I think it's somewhere around 325 or something. <don't quote me on that since I haven't researched or done anything with that trans in quite some time. But yes, your problem is clutch related. What your gonna have to do is this. Buy yourself a BBK clutch cable and QUADRANT, due to the fact that the factory clutch quadrant is PLASTIC and is a turd and wears out rather fast, especially if you have a performance clutch in it. Also when you buy the clutch cable, make sure it comes with the firewall adjuster as they come in handy when the cable starts to stretch and your clutch engagement starts to climb up on you. Also buy yourself a new clutch and either a) have your stock flywheel resurfaced or b) get a nice flywheel..

Now as far as clutches, I like the Centerforce, but they do require some pressure to push down and it can wear you out, or you can get a fidanza as they are extremely easy to push down.. I hope this helps, and if you need any more information just ask! Not sure if you know where the Quadrant is located :bigthumbsup

Dear Snakebite01...

Thanks for your input. The only trouble I have is the 2008 uses a hydraulic clutch and does not have a cable. There is an adjustable hydraulic throwout bearing which is adjustable and needs to be used, I have read, when putting in any clutch other than the stock Ford clutch. It cost a little over 300 dollars, so you can see things are getting a bit expensive. I have changed clutches in the past, but I have place to do them now as I no longer have a garage and my son two states away has all my tools. I am at the mercy of the local mechanics.

Thanks for your input.. it is most appreciated.

Have a great day... today is round two with the dealer... LOL

Dave no longer V6 Dave by the way.. .LOL

Dear Ski...

There is a TSB about clashing gears in the 2007 and 2008 Mustang GT's that a mechanic friend of mine printed out for me. I also caught my dealer lying to me along with his head mechanic forman. I Dealership several towns away that I deleiver to hooked me up with the eight hundred number to Ford CRC Group.. I spoke to him, told him about the lie, and about what was going on. He said to take the car to the other Dealer and he is sure I will be very pleased at the results. I was happy then. The unmitigated gaul to be concecending to me and act the way he did while the sales manager looked on from his office, but never came out and introduced himself and wanted to know what was up. I told the Ford Rep that the Dealer threatened me by saying don't take the car to the other dealership for a second opinion or diagnosis as I would be sorry. The Ford Rep said... baloney and that I should take it to the other dealer and have it fixed to myh satisfaction. So things are looking better. They tried to tell me that they had changed the oil in the car 300 miles before I bought it, yet when I changed it at an additional 100 miles the oil was blacker than the asphalt on the roads.... HMMMM

So I seem to be on my way.. will set up appointment with the other Dealership and I know a mechanic that is friends with the Service manager and also the head mechanic. He said he will talk to them and then all will be made right....

Thanks for you helf Ski...I feel I am at last heading towards a solution...

This sounds EXACTLY like the issues with an '07GT I had for a short time. I bought it with 24K miles and put 1K on it. The transmission and clutch were trash. It is now gone and I'm happy to have my 2010 GT that does NOT have this problem.

Dave,
You're welcome. Some dealerships have better customer service than others. You did the right thing by calling Ford. Good luck in getting the problem fixed.
