I bought a 2008 Mustang GT with the TR3650 Trans. The car has a problem shifting when it has sat over night first thing in the morning. Shifts from first to second and third to fourth feel like you are shifting without pushing in the clutch and the synchros are bad. If you shift real slow, say like five seconds or so to pull the shift lever from first to second, it seems to shift OK. Trying to shift it normally or briskly, not even at a speed you would use in a race, produces the offending clashing feel in the shift lever. The shift from second to third will often times lock out on you unless are are perfect. When this happens you have to pull it back into second and then it will go into third. I personally drained the transmission fluid and replaced it with exactly 3.2 qts of Mercon V. I drove the car over three hundred miles after changing the fluid, but it still acted the same as before the fluid was changed. The clutch engages and the car starts to move when the peddle is just about fully released. The car will begin to move slowly and then lurch in the last quarter inch of final clutch pedal movement. When the car sits in the parking lot on a hot day, after work it does not exhibit the same symptoms as it does when it is about 70 degrees or cooler in the morning. Daytime temps have been averaging over ninety five degrees.
I took the car into the Ford Dealership, and naturally the car had been driven. So when the Dealership test drove the car in the afternoon, they said they could find no problems with it shifting. It is a hard shift even when the trans fluid is warm. If you try to pull a fast shift you feel it snap into gear like a snapping of a light switch. It is not smooth like butter in any sense of the word. I have spoken to other GT owners locally, one with a 2007 and the other with a 2003. They both said they can shift as fast as they want and it is very smooth with no synchro problems when their trans fluid is cold in the morning. The 2003 is a Roush Mustang and he said he thinks all my problems are clutch related. That the clutch is not releasing and spinning down fast enough, which is why a very slow granny shift causes no problems. The Dealer has kept the car overnight and will drive it in the morning. If they wait till it is hot, I am sure they will say there is no problem again. The man who owns the Roush is a mechanic, and if the Dealer gives me the car back unfixed, I am paying him to drive my car and do a clutch and transmission diagnosis that I can take back to the Dealership and also give to the Ford Area Service Rep.
The car had about 20500 miles on it when I bought it and it now has 21735 , miles on it. I found out from the Dealer AFTER I signed over my 2007 V6 Mustang Convertible and signed the papers for this car, that the car I bought had been a lease car. My trade in had 35000 miles on it and the driver's side floor mat was in almost perfect shape, the driver's mat in this car has the nap all worn away in about a 2 1/2 inch circle by the accelerator pedal. We all know how people treat and drive rental and lease cars. If I had known before signing I would not have bought it. The Dealer hadn't even bothered to change the oil, as I changed it the other day and it was as black as the paint on my the exterior of my car. The sticker called for the oil being due to be changed THIS month.
So.. any thoughts if my problems are clutch, transmission or both and possible thoughts on how to handle this with the dealer. This car cost me over 26000 dollars and will be more like 33000 when it is paid off. If it had only cost me 8000 dollars, hect, I would have a new clutch put in and the trans rebuilt. I think this dealer needs to wake up and fix the problem.
Thanks to any help or replies members of this forum can give me.... I know the Dealer seems to have hosed me.. but I need to get this problem resolved before the winter when I am told shifing will be near impossible.
