We tried 6 different timing chains that are suppose to be OEM for a 1988 Mustang GT. None of them fitdissapointed.gif. In 2002 a Crane Timing chain was installed but I understand Crane doesn't make timing chains for Mustangs at this time.
Are there 2 different sizes for the factory timing chain maybe 1/2 inch or 1 inch sizes?
If so who sells these?

Six chains?! Are you sure you're seating the sprocket fully? I assume you're having trouble with the cam sprocket.
It a mechanic that cannot install it because it does not fit. He showed me it and I heard for 1988 there were two different timing chain sizes. Most places only carry one size apparently. One parts place told me there is a 1/2 and 1 inch size sprocket. But when you purchase most come in larger size.

Wow I didn't know that. I wonder why they made different ones?

Rockauto has a good variety. They have Sealed Power sets that specify the cam sprocket hub thickness. And it looks like there is only one offered in that size.

SEALED POWER Part # KT3163SA
Timing Set - 3 Pc.; Incl. double rlr. type chain; .500" thick cam sprocket hub; (1) 222-163; (1) 223-468; (1) 223-531 (Only 2 Remaining)
If you're ordering from Rockauto, look around here for a coupon code. There should be a continuing thread around here somewhere.

In all my years of messing with 5.0's. I've never seen two different style timing sets for the HO engine. Either you have some odd ball parts in the engine, your mechanic has no clue what he is talking about. The 1/2" or 1" size I can't understand either.. Only thing I can gather from that may be single roller or double roller chains. But you should be using a single roller anyways.

Look at a Summit catalog. Cloyes lists three different chains: one of which is for 1984-2001 HO. The other 2 are one piece (1962 - 1984) or two piece (1970 - 1984) fuel pump eccentric. If I was you, I'd check what year block is in that car.

I was told that Ford was known to change parts in the middle of the 1988 year from a parts store which does have inventory for both timing chain sizes.]
Seems to be alot of these websites only carry the one that doesn't fit mine.
But for now the current Crane Timing chain was reinstalled at no extra charge since it had to come out to replace water pump and timing cover. Condition of current timing chain is slightly loose but replacement is not necessary but was an option at time when the waterpump was replaced I was told.

What happens when you actually need to replace said timing chain? I would still want to know what to order then. If you sell the car, at least let the next guy know.

I replaced mine this Summer when I did my water pump and I ordered it from Late Model Restoration. It was a Comp Cams 2138 Magnum. It was tight relative to the worn out one that was on the car, but it slid on easily and fit perfectly.

Block year doesn't matter. You can use either timing set on either block as long as the correct parts are used.

What motor do you have in your stang?

There is only one double roller for the HO motors.

89coupe is correct.

And there was no timing chain change mid year of 1988 for the mustang.
