My car, a 2008 GT is in the Dealership having the transmission rebuilt. The synchros were shot by the way the previous owner drove it since it was a lease car, I think it was sort of abused. I bought the car from the Dealer about two weeks ago. I battled with them over the clutch and after a call to the Ford Customer Relations Group I finally got a response directly from the Service Manager, I think they really gave it to him. After a test ride with ME driving this time, they heard the problem of clashing gears and agreed to the repairs.

Now to the clutch. I have read in the forums that the clutch life is not good with the Mustang GT's. So I asked them to replace the clucth since they would have the transmission out of the car already and there would be not much more work needed to put in a new clutch. I got a call yesterday and the price to replace the clutch was in my budget, however, the Service Manager told me that the clutch is on backorder with Ford. He said he would call me on Tuesday to discuss the matter more in detail as they are closed today and Monday. I called up another local Ford Dealer and did not get an answer if they had a stock clutch kit in stock, however they transfered me over to the Motor Sports Group and they have a Rousch Clutch Disc. The problem, he said the Rousch disc requires a new Pressure Plate, a new Flywheel and a new Slave Cylinder. He has all the parts in stock but the cost to me would be about $1,500 for the parts alone. Unfortunately having blown my wad on purchasing the car, that cost plus the labor is beyond my financial means.

When I worked at a Chrysler Dealership in VA several years ago in the parts Dept, when we would have a situation like this, we would contact the other Dealers in the area and see if they had the part we needed to satisfy our customer. Nine out of ten times one of them had it and we would send our driver, usually me as I was the backup delivery person and the customer was happy and not inconvenienced due to a Chrysler Parts Backorder.

So.. should I forget having the clutch replaced now and save my pennies for the good clutch setup down the road, or should I push him to contact other Dealerships for the part. I have been super disappointed with this Dealership as they have lied to me about several things and when proven they were lying, changed the subject. I told the Ford CRG about the lies and they were not happy about that fact.

So help.. the car has 21000 miles on its Odometer at present. I will ask them to at least check the present clutch disc and let me know the amount of wear it has. Is it down 24%, 50% or even more? I would think that would also help me to make a decision as to the best way to go. As I said, although I would like to go with the Roush clutch setup, it would cost four times the cost of replacing the clutch with a stock GT clutch. Even a clutch from American Muscle requires a new Flywheel, Pressure Plate and the use of an adjustable slave cylinder and that brings the price up. I remember the days when all you did was resurface the flywheel, pressure plate, put in a new disc, pilot bearing and throwout bearing and you were good to go.

Please help as I had the car two weeks and now I already don't have it for a full week. They did not even have a loaner vehicle so I had to borrow my 88 year old Moms car... Sheeeeesh..

Thanks for any replies...

Dave

If it was your business and someone wanted something done that was not part of an agreed warranty repair would you pay for it? or the difference? I didn't think so...I feel it is up to you to provide the parts at your expense esp since the Roush parts are much more expensive than stock and it's not up to the dealer to absorb the cost for something that he has no control over, esp when it's not "apples to apples"...
Since you have no money, I'd not be buying parts that don't need replacing.
Also you have to realize when you buy a used car that part of the risk of the lower price is some repairs, it happens to all of us, it's part of life...sorry for the reality check.

Since your clutch from the dealership was already on backorder you should of just went ahead and ordered yourself a stronger aftermarket clutch bad move.
I just ordered a Centerforce dual friction clutch for my mustang
to replace my Spec stage 2 clutch that failed in 5K miles of use.
