i'm sitting with my camaro buddy vinny discussing the retro muscle wave....he says our new mustang is nothing new and that it sort of existed 14 years ago...that ford simply went back to a design it already had....i thought about it..i'm a car buff...but i couldnt think of any mustang that resembled our beloved s197 since the 60s...so vinny goes to his desk and brings back this...1991 aston martin....since its a sister of jaguar which is a sister of ford this design was in fact on fords desk...i gotta admit its a bit close...wayyy close...note the grille...note the side mirror...note the side skirt...note the ducktail spoiler...note the body lines and tell me what you think

Yeah, I remember the Aston Martin, in the late 80's looked like a mustang. As a high school kid, I couldnt' tell the difference. I remember the car magazine testing it and saying it was the only car tested, that could hit redline, in high gear. The rpm and speedo climbed right off the gauge. 7,000 RPM and 175MPH.
TELL YOUR CHEVY BUDDY TO COMPARE THE NEW CAMARO TO THE MUSTANG.TALK ABOUT COPYING A TREND:winks
G
he didnt deny that but that isnt /wasnt the point...we were discussing that s197/aston connection....
since the 60's mustang is before the 90's Aston, I don't get how the current one copied the 90 Aston when it supposed to copy the 60's mustang :shrug
the problem nghtrnnr is that this idea of Ford copying the s197 came from a "Camaro Guy" ie: that tells me automatically that it is BS. not to stomp on your friend (since i dont even know him) but chevy guys (especially camaro guys) are almost always trying to find some way to bash the stang to make them feel better about thier choice to own sh1tty chevys. (like its our fault or something) its worse now than it ever was since the 'maro got killed by gm. its a jealousy thing. :tongue
BTW, the ONLY resemblence I see with the 90's Aston Martin and the s197 is the fogs. and when it came to redesigning the stang for '05, i just dont see ford saying: "those old-a$$ 90's Astons are lookin' b1tch'n, lets hit the Zerox button." any resemblence that anyone sees is purely coincidental....

besides the camaro copying fords idea of retro.... you could also point out GMs blatent Zeroxing of Chrysler's PT crusier with GMs new (supposedly "true to thier heritage") HHR. not only does it resemble absolutely noting from GMs past, it is most decidely chrysler's past sitting on a gm platform. either way it looks like a$$crack.:sterb:

and have you seen the new Tahoe? zerox'd from Range Rover.:winks just a little more ugly. IMHO, i think GM is running out of design ideas.

quite simple, let me enlighten you to a chevy guys answer to that: Ford copied the 90's aston martin back in the 60's for the ORIGINAL mustang. :winks

seriously, some of the crap that rolls out of thier mouths makes about that much sense.
i'm pretty sure the guy that designed the pt cruiser for chrysler went to chevy and designed the hhr ,what a stretch huh?

...and that's when I stopped reading from laughing.
So, what if Aston Martin copied the lines of the 60s Mustang in the 90s??

I think one has to consider the source of the Aston inspirations and it immediately refers back to the Mustang of the late 60's. It's a no-brainer:sleeping:

That aston martin was the vantage, and it's really bad ass car. I would love to own one.

I've always loved the Aston Martin since Bond, James Bond drove one in "Goldfinger" - what a classic. However, I really don't see any resemblance to our 'Stang's except coincedental. The only car our new Mustangs resemble are the classic '64 - '70 'Stangs and that is deliberate.
well i dont think they look all that similar . but if your buddy persists in thinkin they do look alike , it may be in our interests to find some aston martin badges and transfer them to the 05 mustang and sell them for $50,000 more back to him and his peers that do believe this. let them think what they want . id dont mind my car being compared to a $100,000 car.vynle

lol...i know twoscoop....if you look close theres one of them bigfoot creatures running past the background
Even if they did.. Why does it matter? Car designers always take ideas from other cars... uh that's how it works:sterb: .

Tell your budy to put the pipe down.
I have several of the recently published Mustang books that go into quite a bit of detail regarding the redesign of the 2005 Mustang(a sweet read!). Currently these books are in storage while I am moving, but I do not remember reading anything about the Ford engineers taking any design cues from any other cars other than the Mustang. I will look again when I am moved in, but if my memory serves me, the engineers gathered up all the Mustang designs from past years, and pretty much made a compilation of the best features and most popular models, while also adding in some new flairs of their own.

From those pictures of the Astin Martins, it looks like the Astin Martin not only copied the Mustang, but also took some hints from the '69 Camaro.
Try something a little more along these lines, say, 1976...

The curves of the front facia mimic this car moreso, than most of the other model years of the Mustang. And the ducktail is the same too.

THANK YOU SANDWICH!!
I read through all the posts to see if anyone said it and wouldn't you know, it was the last post i read.
that Aston Martin has so much more resemblance to the Mustang II's. Nothing on that AM reminds me of the 05 Stang. But, that Aston really rawks in black. very cool.
