Do NOT have after-market door speakers installed

...by a paid installer.

I installed a pair of Boston Acoustic SE85 (new model of S85) today in under an hour. This was while still being very cautious not to chip or crack any plastic inserts or tabs. Just get a pair of Mitra harnesses, take your time and it is a very easy process. Everythign you need to know about disassembling the doors is right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9y5XvYQcBI

Oh and the stock speakers are more craptastic than I ever imagined. I've seen more robust speakers in transitor radios

The BAs are a HUGE difference for $64

is everything else stock or did you need to get an amp too?
All I did was swap the 5x7s. With the stock speakers I could not go much past 1/2 way without everything getting very harsh. Now it stays prety much clean as loud as I want to go.

Since the BA's have very low nominal wattage (2w) everything is still very detailed at low voume.

The Shaker 500 does not suck. It is not an audiophile system, but it is surprisingly improved with just a quick, cheap speaker upgrade.
what do you think about these?

I know that having them amped would make a huge difference besides using the stock amps from the shaker 500... but if there wouldn't be a difference then I would settle for the boston acoustics SE85. And you must have got a good deal on those from someone because I can't find a lower price than 72 dollars.
I've never tried Focal before, but you are probably not going to do 250 speakers justice with the stock unit.

I got the Boston Acoustics @ QUICK E SHOP on Amazon. I had ordered S85s but they said they ran out of stock. Since they accepted my order they sent me the SE85. As I understand same speaker aside from cosmetics, new model #

I can't find their listing anymore, but here is another for $65 shipped

Focal are high end speakers, I had them as part of the audiophile-grade system in my TA and they were driven by high end amps and HU and I agree with MCA, if you are going to use the stock amps, I wouldn't spend that kind of money. I have a $5k home system for critical listening and I don't need that in my muscle car, but for the price, these BA's sound like worthy upgrade!

PS- As the OP stated, the shaker 500 is definitely not an audiophile system, not even close. It does thump though and sounds pretty damned good with the right song and a clean signal. Curious to see how it sounds with a cheap upgrade on the 5x7's.
I thought you could fit 6x8s in the doors.
FYI, especially if amazon charges you tax, you can get it cheaper at hookedontronics.com for $63.28 shipped, no tax. (When I went to site they gave me a 2.5% discount code) and the reseller ratings for this store are impeccable.

I'd like to know if this is true, because I think they sell the same speaker in a 6x8

Anyone have experience with the Polk audio db571s? They fit front doors and rear deck and aren't too badly priced.
crack any plastic inserts or tabs. Just get a pair of Mitra harnesses,
Do you mean metra harnesses? Which ones to buy and why?

Same speaker, they come with adaptor / spacer rings

Yes, sorry for the typo

72-5600. The car is set up to accept the harness from the speaker. You could scavenge the recepticles off the stock speakers or hack your wiring, but neither is worth the headache for an $8.95 adaptor (for the pair). I got the harnesses here: Metra 72-5600 Ford Speaker Harness Pair New | eBay

Thanks for the info...why didn't you go for the 6x8's though? Felt the stock amplification wouldn't take advantage of the bigger speaker?
The 6x8 IS the same speaker as the 5x7 and is adaptable to either cutout

Ahh, ok thanks. And you only replaced the front speakers and left the rear speakers stock? Did you adjust the fade more to the front?

On a side note, Amazon told me those BA's do NOT fit my vehicle? The stock speakers are 5x7, correct?

no experience yet, but I did buy a set of four to replace the originals as soon as I get the nerve.. this video makes the doors look easy but the package tray pair looks a little more difficult..
For a about $30 more these look to be darn near audiophile-grade and 2x the power handling in case you decide to add an amp in the future. Great reviews online too. One site voted it the #1 5x7 out there:

They sell for $180 a pair on Crutchfield in their "Signature" collection:

I think I'm going to go with these, but question: How do you figure out which Metra adapter goes with which speaker?

+1 to what the OP said. Two sets of 5x7s/6x8s and the stereo sounds totally different. I went with two sets of Polk DXi570s, which I got for $60 per pair at Best Buy (on clearance), and a set of the Metra pigtails. WELL worth it. If you're hesitant on doing the rear speakers, don't be. They are easy, you just have to take your time. Plan on spending 90 minutes to get them done.

In the future, I may get the Kicker/Shelby replacement stock amp, and eventually replace the 8" woofers in the door, but for now, the system sounds markedly better than when I first got the car.

For that price, I would go with components haha :bounce2:
