Hey there everyone,

My name is Erik Johnson, and I am new to the forum. I was doing some research on the issues that the MT-82 manual transmission seems to be having and noticed that it is very similar another Getrag unit that we developed some solutions for.

The problems that are being experienced are very much the same, and I think that we can use some of our past experience with Getrag units to help solve this for everyone.

What we need however is a gearbox that is out of the car to really diagnose and test. Can someone email me with either a friendly dealership that might be willing to loan us a unit, or contact information for anyone who has one?

I realize that I am brand new to the group and I am not trying to sell anything, so please do not flame on me just yet. I am just trying to see if I can be of some help to everyone here. If we can rectify the issue, then I will certainly spend the money to be a vendor here, and sell the solution to everyone who is interested.

I can tell you this. While I realize that this is somewhat different from Ford's recommendation, and you may want to consider if this will void your warranty first, I would think about using a different oil. The Getrag units that we have worked on in the past, with a very similar synchronizer setup, did not like synthetic oils, AT ALL.

I look forward to hearing from anyone that can help on this, and hopefully I will be able to offer a solution to everyone here in short order.

Do you happen to be the Defensman Erik Johnson for the Avalanch? Notice you say Colorado for your location! I'm a St. Louis Blues season ticket holder.

Nope I am sorry to say that I am not a Colorado Avs player. I just a lowly transmission specialist, here to try to be of some help to everyone.

Thanks for asking though.

While I'm glad you are jumping in feet first to this situation, you are going to need much more than just a broken transmission to come up with an accurate diagnosis and viable repair solution.

You will also need the clutch with hydraulic release system mounted to a rig to test proper release, as well as the shift linkage assembly.

Adam Louramore from Joe Heck Racing is working on the test rig for the clutch release system so hopefully we will hear about that soon.

In my professional opinion I think too much attention(on this forum) is being put on the transmission and not enough on the clutch and release system. Having a broken transmission would not be enough to say whether it was due to faulty design and manufacture, or if it was damaged from an improperly releasing clutch.

I'm sure you have thought about that but just by counting the number of threads with MT82 in the title tells me people are forgetting there are other components in the car that facilitate transferring power from the engine to the wheels.

I just want to do my due diligence in getting this issue solved and people enjoying their Mustangs.

When you do find the fix, DONT TELL ANYONE and sell the solution to Ford for big $$$$$. Then Ford can "pony up" and fix all the 5.0's with issues that are still under warranty.

I don't think Ford can't find a solution, I think they don't want to. All these warranty repairs would probably mean a net loss on the Mustang. Instead they'll say all is normal and hope everybodies warranty runs out sooner than later. All the while designing the next generation Mustang without the 3.7L, 5.0L, & MT82.

I have given quite a bit of thought to the issue of the clutch, flywheel and pressure plate. I think that you might underestimate the knowledge that can be gained by diagnosing and taking down a gearbox. Much can be learned in terms of what is causing the damage to take place.

In terms of the solution, once we have found it, we are very willing to share this with everyone.

Unfortunately this sounds more likely than not - however keep in mind Ford warranties its powertrains for 5 yrs/60,000 miles vs. every other component 3 yrs/36,000.

But with my luck, no mods but axlebacks better not get me in trouble should I need help.
