Driveshaft Issue...

5583 Views 20 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  PMDmustang13
Just started to notice a thump under my ass after a semi quick shift / slightly aggressive driving (in Chicago so it is impossible to step on it right now)

I am debating on a new one piece shaft or having Ford issue a new shaft under warranty because of the collapsed bushing... please look at the vid and give me your thoughts on the amount of "play" in the carrier bearing.

Sorry but your video doesn't come up,error message !

Get it fixed under warranty. Then if you do get a one piece DS you can put the stock one back on if you decide to sell the car later on.

X2. use the warranty first, save the $$ for single piece if it happens again out of warranty. There could be other things wrong aside from the bushing too.... Extended cost of the fix may have cost-wander....

good info... how much play should be in this center mount??

I don't believe there is to be any play. Definitely don't drive that car any more than you have to in order to get it to the dealer, diagnosed, and repaired under warranty. You may want to have it towed there. I believe the warranty takes care of that too. Call your dealer ASAP.

Then worry about spending 600 dollars on a 1 piece shaft.

car is in the shop right now... at first the shop foreman said the video looked normal then went for a test drive. He did notice a thud upon shifting, so now they are looking into it.
I wonder if the shop foreman has been trained to say "Oh that is normal" no matter the circumstance? I sure don't remember there being any slop at all at the carrier bearing when I replaced my 2 piece drive shaft.
Just got a call saying as the car seems normal but are comparing it with another car AND awaiting a call from FORD to proceed with anything further... I obviously cannot exept this as the part is worn and i have a massive thud while shifting fast. The forman i drove with was not able to drive the car quick as he stated "he is not good at driving stick" dissapointed.gif

Well... just got the call "everything is in spec, come get your car"

nothing has been replaced and they have had the car for 8+ hours...
When you say "the shop", do you mean the dealer?
From what I know this IS totally normal. The carrier bearing will move quite a bit as you have shown. And the noises per another forum member who said he got it from a Ford tech is not the drive shaft. I don't think you have anything to worry about and it sounds like your dealer confirmed it.

Sorry I may have been mistaken about there not being any slop at the carrier bearing that but it sure does not seem right to me to be able to move up and down vertically that much. But what the link choate provided does make sense about the drivetrain lash or rotational slop.

Mainly I'm surprised that a GT has a two-piece drive shaft. I thought, that this is a sickness of the V6.
However, I would recommend to check with another dealer. Based on my opinion - what I have seen from the video - this movement can't be within tollerances. This looks even quite dangerous.
How much force are you using to move it like that?

I got under mine to check it and it moved a little bit but I was applying a good bit of force to move it and I don't think it moved that much.
not much force at all! I am on my back in a tight area... So a FORD rep called me today and is arranging for me to bring the car to a dealer that should be able to diagnose the car a bit better. I stepped on it a bit today and this banging sound is just awful. I will have them check the motor mounts also.

That's not right. A little movement with enough force is normal but you have too much IMO.

so Ford customer service called and I have a meeting with a new dealer soon... but ironically I was able to check out one of these bushings off a ford truck without the bed on... the rubber is solid and will not let this DS move much at all. this is night an day compared to mine.

**UPDATE**

Brought the car to another dealer and they have confirmed the drive shaft problem in the joint and mount... NEW revised shaft has been ordered! coolbeans.gif
