Does anybody have drone bad enough that you regret your Axleback muffler choice?

Good 1st question new guy I look forward to reading some interesting replies. I have the Bassani axel back and do love it when I want to impress. but I do
sometime feel like I'm droning when I'm just cruising along at a consistence rpm. But no I don't regret the Bassani, I love it.

Don't mind the drone

I don't mind the droning sound, as long as it isn't too piercing. My 5.0L truck does it at certain RPMs and more when it is cold. I like it.

Once warm and everything is running happy, at about 5,000 RPM it sounds pissed off. Like it is screaming mad. RRRRRRRRRR!!!!! Not really a sound I can put into words.

Is a video of JBAs that sounds nice. However, some on this list have actually pulled their JBAs because they sounded so crappy! Replaced them with GT takeoffs. I dunno, I like the sound.

If you want to hear a really great sounding Axle-back muffler... go to http://www.grabthepower.com/ , select SOUNDS from the menu bar, then Ford, then Mustang and choose the sound clips for the 05's.

I do like mine a lot... they have been on my 05 GT for about four months. I can guarantee you they are the most unique sounding muffler for a 4.6L 3V on the market. They aren't baffled inside, they have what IMCO calls a double wing (which is a way of directing the exhaust flow through the muffler), there is a drone between 1800-2100 RPM. I will continue to put up with this little annoyance to have the overall sound of these mufflers, deep at startup and acceleration and a really great sound on decelaration, no popping or cracking.... 3.90/4.10 gears will fix any drone at cruising speeds in 4th or 5th gear.

Give a listen.... we're all different. :thumbsup

I paid $314.00 including shipping.... bought them on e-Bay.... however I just checked on the seller's site and it wasn't there. The shop where I had all my parts installed is an IMCO distributor.... I will call him tomorrow and see what he can get them for. If he can get the Extreme 55506 I'll post the price and his address. :thumbsup .... You might contact 918chef who has a post on this site 'IMCO's does anyone have them", he purchased a set, they arrived damaged so he cancelled his order.

I've been running the JBA axleback for some time now. I love the sound at all RPM's. More of a purr than a drone.

What does a Drone sound like?

I put the SLP axle back "POWER FLO'S" on my 06 because of the loudness everyone talks of with their SLP Loudmouth set ups. It is a real nice balance. I can kinda sneek in in the mornings without waking up the neighborhood but yet when getting after it she talks to you real nice and deep. :eyepoppin

SMEDIN.... You can get a set of IMCO Extreme 55506 axle-backs from Quality Tire & Auto Service.. 505-326-0226.. his warehouse has two sets and they are $357.00 plus shipping... he didn't say how much the shipping would be... I got mine by UPS Ground and I believe it was about $35.00.... Hope this helps.

A drone sounds like baaaaaAAAAAAAA and it never ends (unlkess you change the RPM, and it get's worse under load (uphill.)) It's bad acustics in the muffler, carried over to the car, and then amplified in the cabin... sucks!

I had the worst drone with my MAC's, the exterior sound was better than anything else I've heard though (D's ProChamber comes close.) Swapped them for a set of JBA's with another D who liked the sound and don't dirve as much / mind the interior drone...

I'm VERY happy with the JBA's though... no drone, just a bit over stock idling, with an angry note when you get on it...

annoying-a$$ headache causing vibrating acoustic sound is the best i can do to describe it. flowmasters 40 and 50 series mufflers are some of the worst about it. imagine being inside a base drum when someone is beating on it, as the sound vibrates back and forth through the drum... piercing your brain with its ultra low pitch...:eyebulge: and the pitch is so low that even the shaker 1000 wouldnt cover it up. exhaust drone.....its a curse i tell you, a curse....:eyebulge: punishment for modifying your cars exhaust!!

Would you all say you need dual exhaust to generate a real drone? Need to have another pipe/muffler to set up a harmonic at a cerain pitch, like a tuning fork being placed near another tuning fork set to the same pitch?

Nah, one'll do. I once had an Escort GT and I put on a turbo muffler and it droned pretty loud inside.

I once (don't kill me) got a ride in a swooped up VTEC, gosch was there a drone! Heck I think he had the droning muff welded to the sub frame!!

And listening on the outside you can allready hear the drone on most of them so nope, a single will do it!

KJ, you are correct. It's all a matter of frequency, harmonics and resonance. Even a stock muffler has these same issues except by design you'll probably never hear it. The only issue with duals is that it could be twice as annoying, otherwise the number or mufflers doesn't matter. Your example of the Honda with the fart can illustrates this perfectly.

While coming out of the grocery store, I heard a fartcan going by. It occurs to me that it is possible that the muffler on those things is designed to be entirely drone. Imagine one of those things on a real car? I always wondered what it would sound like on my 3.8 Taurus. The 3.8 has the same bore and stroke as the 5.0L so, with a regular muffler, it should have the same *tone*, right? Only 3/4 as loud? I wonder....

Flowmasters on a Taurus? That is almost ricey in it's desire to be what it's not.
