Dynomax Ultra Cat Back ISSUE RESOLUTION

5982 Views 83 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Deadstick
I called the number that Dynomax provided me about this Right Side Cat Back Issue and this is what I found out:

  • Submitting the ticket on the Dynomax Website (contact-us) does not reach the proper technicians or engineers. They had no clue what I was talking about and the technician stated there was no documentation in their issues database. However, I suggest you still fill out the form at the Dynomax website so there is a trail.
  • Tenneco is the parent company for Dynomax. Call the tech line and report the issue to the technician and get the trail started. Tech Line Number: 1-734-384-7830
  • Please email Julie at [email protected] and let her know you are having the same problems. I talked to her as well but she said she will require proof and more instances of the problem. So please call and email.
  • They have no idea how to compensate the extra labor required due to the manufacturing defect at this time. I figure if enough of us call and email, we will have enough documented complaints for them to address the issue.
  • We need to get a list of names on our end so we can keep a consolidated effort on this.
I find it annoying that they say they have no idea or documentation of this issue!!

I had gone on the web site and notifed them of the problem back on June 13.

EMAILED:

"Hello Julie,

I purchased the 39507 DynoMax exhaust from JEGS. When I took it to my local shop to have it installed, there was a problem with the right muffler piping. What should have been a simple installation requiring an hours labor or less, turned out to be two hours because of the manufacturing defect in your cat-back kit. The problem was that the right muffler pipe didn't have the correct bend in it which caused a major alignment issue when the muffler was fitted to the cat-back exhaust pipes.

The attched photo shows one of the multiple attempts the installer made, trying to get the right exhaust to align properly. As you can understand, I am upset that I am having to pay extra for your defective kit. I would like to receive compensation for the extra time I had to pay to have your faulty kit installed on my car.

Please let me know what Tenneco plans to do to address these issues."

I attached a pic of the installer getting in a fight with the right exhaust, as well as my original invoice. If she wants more proof, the shop will happily let her know how much they hated installing that thing and what they had to do to correct it.
Just called the tech line spoke to Gary and seems they are looking into the problem with the right side, as they are getting complaints.
If you had a problem as I think all of us have give the Tech line a call.
I just had it installed last night and man what a pain in the ass it was to align the right side. We finally got it, and it's near perfect, but it should have never been that way. The left went on perfectly.

I emailed and used the contact form on their site to report the issues.
Having them installed now 1.5 hours in and they are still struggling to get the right tip aligned

Maybe he can get the shop manager to call and talk to them. Could be better to hear from some one like this instead of just the car's owner.
Spoke with a nice customer service agent, Candice, and she said they are aware of the complaints coming in about it and it's now a known issue that they are looking into getting resolved. She is going to try and get ahold of engineering and let me know the latest.

I did mention that they might want to get this sorted out because this kit is going to get popular based on the sound, price and extra butt-dyno HP.

So now we know why they are so competitively priced.
From a company like Walker/Dynomax, I really don't think they were trying to save money on R&D or anything, I just think there might be a slight mistaken in the production somewhere down the line. I bet it'll get sorted out and the cost will stay the same.

Perhaps, at least they are working with you.
Dont stop on informing them. I think they owe everyone the extra labor hours of installation.

Also the advertising is now inaccurate "Bolt-on Application" no longer applies in this situation. If shops are having to cut, weld, and bend, this is now a custom job.

So I asked them to at least reimburse the hour labor charges.

Or at least one of those COOL jackets they have on their web site :gringreen

Please post that and any other pics you have. TIA
Four hours and $100 later I have the system installed with the right tip still completely misaligned.

I intended to go to a custom exhaust shop, but they were not answering the phone so I stopped by in person to learn they would be closed for the next week. On my way back to work, I passed a Midas and thought I would stop in and see if they could do it. They told me they could do it and would charge me $100 for the install or less if it was under and hour of work.

I told them up front that others had issues with aligning the right tip but they told me it was not a problem. I sat there while they tweeked the hangers for a few hours with no results. I finally told them just to get it into a driveable state so I could bring it to a real exhaust shop to have them do it. It is installed with about 25 washers now and with hangers in weird angles and it is still crooked as hell.

I need to bring it someplace that they can bend the pipe to the proper shape. That is the only fix that I think will work for me. Currently, I can hear the pipe hit the undercarriage when I go over bumps.

Also, this thing seems to drone like crazy at around 2600-2700 rpms. Other than that it sounds great. Hoping some of the drone will go away when I put a few miles on it.

Not a happy camper right now. I will email Dynomax with my concerns. At the least, I think they should incur any costs associated with bringing it to another shop to fix the damn thing.

The droning is caused by the improper fit. Mine did the same thing until I got it fixed.
Awesome news. The drone right now sucks but if it goes away, I think the system sounds awesome.

Showed it to a few guys at work who pretty much hated all of the other mustang exhaust videos I showed them (their main complaints were too ricey etc.) They all absolutely loved the sound of the Dynomax.
Please post that and any other pics you have. TIA

You can see the muffler, along with the hanger brackets were pulled out for further adjustment. The tech had already heated the bend to try and get it to fit better and in the pic, you can see him taking a torch to heat it up to bend it more to further work on the alignment... *sigh*

Well to be fair, the videos of most of the exhaust systems does not sound anything like they do in person.
