did the early K codes come with a generator or alternator only?

I believe all early small blocks did come with generators including the K-codes until they switched to alternators during the 65 production year

I read somewhere that they started producing some K codes as early as June of 64. If that's the case, why did they ever produce any of those D code cars in 64?

No difference in power, both were 271 hp.

That's because HP in the 60s was measured 'gross': all accessories such as generator/alternator, power steering, A/C, etc., were removed from the engine. You get higher numbers that way.
