What would 2015 Mustangs be like with an Ecoboost?

Thought you may get a kick out of this. Last week my tuner put a CAI and mufflers on my 2012 5.0 Mustang. This week my tuner hijacked my 2012 F-150 with an Ecoboost for some testing. The truck is stock except for a SUPER SAFE 93 tune now. In 10 days he is throwing a CAI, bigger TB and a Magnaflow cat back at it to see what it does.

Today when I picked the truck up I had him print a graph showing the 5.0 vs the Ecoboost (below). Keep in mind the truck is running through a truck trans and a truck rear end and too add insult to injury it has 33” tires on it. Saying the truck has a little driveline loss is an understatement.

The Ecoboost puts out some seriously impressive power. Granted it peaks real early so it feels more “truck” than “sporty”. But that is because the turbo’s are “done” at 4,000rpm. Boost starts dropping after that. Nothing two slightly bigger turbo’s couldn’t solve in a Mustang application though.

My tuner thinks that with a good CAI, bigger TB and the exhaust the truck will make about 400rwhp and another 20-30 torque. Irresponsible speculation at this point is with slightly bigger turbo’s running through a manual trans and car size rear end, CAI and mild exhaust mods you could make an easy 475-500hp 500-550tq and a big fat powerband.

A 2015 Mustang with no frills, an Ecoboost and an IRS that weighs in the 3300# range would make one sweet car for tearing up the twisties.

Food for thought:

Today on the way home with that big truck and relatively big tires punching a huge hole in the air at 78mph I got 19.4mpg! What would the mileage be in an aerodynamic car?

Yes, the truck is FAST!

With an outside air temp of 96deg the maximum IAT seen during testing was 126deg. That is pretty darn good, and the intercooler is tiny.

I’m all about V-8’s, and think there should be a Mustang available with a Ecoboost 5.0L (Shelby GT500 maybe???). But at the end of the day I wouldn’t exactly be heartbroken with a raging twin turbo V-6 that pulls down great gas mileage either.

I would not be heartbroken over a 5.0 Ecoboost. Probably out of my price range, but I think you're right by suggesting Ford putting it in the GT500. I would definitely entertain the idea of a twin turbo V-6. Could be an interesting time in the next few years.

Facinating, isn't it. Does not exactly scream muscle car, but I will bet it is the wave of the future. Better mileage, same or better power, maybe it's time for a change!!

No V8 means no more Mustang to me, and I don"t think there is a chance in hell for an Eco Boost 5.0 + I don"t care how many turbos or superchargers they hang on a 4 or 6 banger I wouldn"t give it a second look,much less trade in my 11 GT.The way the Mustang is headed with the new look of the 2013, and the Eco boost talk, all I can say is Happy Trail"s to the (NEW) Mustangs,and I am glad I have mine,till death do us part.

As much as I love my 5.0, I've got nothing against boost. I've been stationed in Japan and while there I owned a fairly modified Skyline that was running about 16psi. Anyone who talks bad about boost hasn't experienced anything like that!

It all comes down to cost in the end. Turbos drive up the price of an engine, but there are a lot of benefits. I don't think we'll see a turbo GT. There was a lot of development in the Coyote and I think we'll see something like direct injection before we'd see a new, turbocharged replacement. Same goes for the v6. They don't have any need to improve fuel economy or power for the base model in the near future.

Trucks, on the other hand, are a different story. Turbos and diesels are both GREAT for what a truck is intended to do, and it's driven me nuts that we haven't seen these things employed until recently (not talking about super duty). It's still beyond me why we don't have a turbo diesel half-ton or compact truck available.

I think a ecoboost 6 would be fun, and would love to turbo my 12 V6 since I already have it. But unfortunately from the factory it would probably only produce around the same power as the current 5.0 and fuel economy would likely be on par with the 5.0.....and also might cost more to produce than the current V8, so why do it from the factory?

I am also open to the idea of a ecoboost 5.0 in the next gen mustang, especially if the car is put on a diet. I did not always like turbo cars for a couple of reasons.

1. I just didn't know a great about how to tune a turbo car or supercharged for that matter. Always had N/A cars.

2. I just did not like the sound of turbo cars. I do now though.

My wife just recently bought a 2013 VW CC for her daily driver. We love it. It has the 2.0 turbo motor. It is a gas motor not diesel. It is not exactly a hot rod but, definitley a peppy little car.

The future looks bright the Mustang.

And if they removed the V8 from the mustang line up. You'll see people doing V8 swaps right off the bat. Hell in a year or two, I would bet we all see this post.

2011-13 Mustang 3.7 to 5.0 swap.

Its not impossible, and wouldn't be all too hard. For one no matter auto or mt is the same. Rearend is the same, susp is a little different depending on base or pp. But that can be fixed with aftermarket parts. I'm not sure of this but it maybe possible. The computer for the v6 and v8 could be the same. Meaning hardware wise its the same. So a softmod/reflashing could fix that. Hell the 4.6/5.4 v8's in the explorer's and navagators where the same. They just had tobe reflashed too work. So really might only need, a 5.0, new motor mounts, headers, gt front springs, maybe fuel pump, and a reflash. Hell if my v6 drops dead and the car is in good shape. A v8 of some flavor will replace it.

I am not a racer. Not on the track nor on the street. I own a Mustang because it is fun, fast, and easy on the eyes.

If I was only interested in speed I would have bought a bike. I love the feeling you can only get by sitting behind 8 cylinders and in front of a live axel. If the next Mustang GT is a 500hp twin turbo V6, I will stare at it, try to bum a drive in one and happily talk to their drivers but under no circumstances will I be pried out of my "old fashioned V8 and live rear axel dinosaur"

When it comes to that intangible feeling of rolling down the road with the windows down listening to that burble, there is no replacement. That IS the definition of a Mustang. Anything less is a sportscar called a Mustang. I'm sure it will be gorgeous and fast but no thanks.

As previously mentioned though, a lot was invested into the coyote engine, I highly doubt it'll be done away with so soon. An Ecoboost Coyote if it ever comes to be will, as also mentioned, most likely be the GT500/Cobra. I would LOVE a twin turbo V6. Any idea how easily you will wring power out of it? How light it will be? It'd be a vicious monster to say the least.
All in all, I love mustangs, and am very pro it leaping forward, advancing further, and becoming even more sophisticated.

I doubt the 5L is in any danger and can see them offering an ecoboostas an option. Their V6 ecoboost currently gets up to 365 hp and they could even go the route of the 4 banger similar to the engine in the new Focus ST that puts out 250 hp but up to 270 lbft or torque as an entry level. The 5L gets good mileage as it is and they put a lot of development into it to kill it at this stage.

I'm pretty sure the rumor with the ecoboost engines was doing away with the V6 and doing a Ecoboost 2.2L'ish 4 cylinder. The 5.0 would remain unchanged. You guys are kinda on the oppostie side of the spectrum.

Umm...it's Briton that drives on the left side (or sits on the other side)...not in Europe. You're right that there may be changes to the design to sell in Europe, but that doesn't mean the end of the V8 in a Mustang. Especially not in America.

I don't put much stock in renderings 2 years from the actual unveiling of a car. Just because there is talk of a turbo V6 in a Mustang doesn't make it the only option that Ford will pursue in the U.S. There is nothing set in stone here...that's the whole idea of this thread.

Question,Does anyone remember what happened to our performance cars starting in 1971, how about the Mustang II, Gov"t and insurance regulations, fuel standards.History always has a way of repeating over and over again,I lived through the first downsize of GOODBY performance cars and all the B/S they fed us,not me not this time around.

There will definitely be an ecoboost engine in the next Mustang but it's going to be a 4-cylinder not the 6 or 8. The ecoboost V6 is a great engine but it does cost more to make than the 5.0L and it's fuel economy advantage is only realized on the highway.

I would love a twin turbo six. not a single turbo for. No thank you I will keep my 3.7 or upgrade to a used 5.0
