Electric fan clearance issues with water pump outta Cougar

1192 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Smurf stang
It's been a while since I bought the fan at pic pull so off of memory I believe it was a 96 Cougar. I am putting it against a Cougar aluminum radiator. It hits the water pump by about a 1/4 of an inch. Has anyone else had this issue? If so how did you fix it?

On one of my customs I have 1/4" clearance from the water pump pulley to the fan motor using a Lincoln Mark 8 fan. Yours is probably the same fan.

Check the clearance between the fan and the radiator. Can you make up the 1/2" there? You can't get too close because the plastic shroud will deflect as the fan sucks itself to the radiator. Plan on having at least 1/2".

You can try to flip the assembly over to see if it moves the fan away from the water pump or see if you can trim the shroud, if not then look into finding a dual fan from a Ford Contour or 99-02 Cougar.
On my Ranger I [not so simply] moved the radiator to the front of the radiator support......groucho.gif

If this were a Lincoln fan it would have a D in the part number though I think the part number shown is for the shroud only and not the assembly.

Like the others said try moving the fan around, up, down, left, right.
You could also move the rad some.

If nothing else works you could trim the shroud some and pull it closer to the rad by 1/2" or so. You usually got to do this to the Mark style fans.
