Hi guys im in a bit of a pretty bad situation. Recently my engine started Knocking so i took it in and they said the bearings were destroyed and oil pump shattered. I have a 2005 GT with around 100k miles. The mechanic said it be better to just buy a whole new engine rather than try to rebuild this one. So my question is which route would be the best to take? I found a engine on Americanmuscle.com (Ford Racing Coyote 5.0 4V) engine which costs around $6,000. But i've also been finding used engines for about $2,000 with 59K miles on it. Im pretty tight on money so im wondering if buying the used engine even though its the cheaper way, would come back with more problems. Should I just take the longer way and try to save up for a new one rather than used engine? And how much would labor generally cost to take out and put in a new engine? Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated, thank you.

I've been getting labor quotes of about 2k for labor. You could get that used engine, put forged internals in it, and have a few bucks leftover from buying brand new.

And if your going from a 4.6 to the coyote, you have a LOT more to do than just swap the engine.

Yeah, basically nothing in your engine management system is going to be of any use to you so, you'll need to run the $1800 controls pack they use for street rod applications. Then your gauges still won't work, your anti theft will be an issue, making the car communicate with the junction box in the car so you can run the interior stuff may cause headaches, etc.

So, stick with what the car came with or be prepared for a lot of work to get this to go. You can probably pick up a JY 3V for not much more than $1000, as they are really common and not that desireable.

so since getting the OEM 2005 engine is the better option, do they only sell used '05 engines or could i request a new one with 0 miles on it. If not then where is a good place to start looking for used '05 4.6L engines

Because of the huge number of inexperienced drivers who wreck their GT Mustangs, there should be a large inventory of engines at your local junk yard. Give them a call.

and.....at good recyclers...they will run the engine if possible prior to removal for you and you can always take it to a engine dyno, not for tuning for a general diagnostic which is fairly cheap and you can make it a condition of the sale.

"remanufactured" engine from company like Jasper is another option -- generally as good as new or maybe a little better in some areas; price somewhere in the middle between junk yard and new

thank you im going to look into this, do you know if jasper engines would be able to handle as much HP as the OEM 4.6 could? and would it be a more quiet engine?

I am pretty sure they are remanufactured to original factory specs, so everything should be pretty much the same -- same power, same noise level, etc.

I think they use a few components here and there that are "better" than original but probably not a noticeable difference.

There's a website called car parts and it takes the inventory of every junkyard and it puts it in the database to search with a price... Get a cheap one go with a stroker kit and you'll be set..

Any 4.6 Mustang engine, 05-10 will work. If you are looking to get out cheap, consider using the truck 4.6 3V. You can swap over all your intake and exhaust bits, thus making comparable power, and the truck engine will likely be a lot cheaper.

FYI....Jasper's QA isn't what it used to be and even when it is obviously their fault (using non-reconditioned used parts), their warranty process is truly a PITA...............just do a google.......

Just got done dealing with this. Had an engine replaced with a Jasper engine and it burned oil and lacked power from day one. Oil would come out black at 1000 miles. The passengers side cylinder head didn't quite line up and I had to drill and shim the AC compressor to keep it from throwing belts. Jasper wouldn't replace for that. At 28000 miles, the motor was knocking HARD. A Jasper rep looked at the truck recommending it to be changed under warranty. Per their investigation, it "allegedly" knocked and failed due to loss of compression by user error in not changing oil, so they didn't pay labor for the engine swap. Never once did they investigate the head being about an 1/8-1/4 too far back or the alignment issues. I'll never buy another Jasper engine.

IMHO...check with the local hot rod guys (old timers), IMHO, the best is to go with a local machine shop that is family owned & run...been in business for a long time....otherwise for a inexpensive quickie....check out slep bys/auto zlone.

The second jasper engine is running as good or better than the original engine did, but the first Jasper engine and the warranty service was a nightmare.

okay so if i dont decide to get a whole new engine, and just rebuilt this one. Get new bearings, oil pump, and just replace what needs to be fixed....would that be a decision that id regret half a year down the road? or should i just go new engine. From the looks of it, to rebuild this it would cost about 2-2.5k

Even though the other guys warned about Jasper, this gives you an idea of what a complete remanufactured engine would cost: about $4K

It is a judgment call as to whether the extra $1.5-2K would be worth it in the long run; I don't have any specific experience with that so hopefully someone else will chime in who does.

Buying a rebuilt 4.6 may be your most cost-effective option
