Just good ol' soap and water. I have a dedicated wash mitt for the engine bay as well. And for drying, an electric blower or compressed air. If it's extra greasy in there, you can use some Gunk engine cleaner or Simple Green is also decent.

I don't use any of that detailer spray stuff. It does look nice when it's freshly done, but it also attracts more dust n' crap. It will stay cleaner for much longer if you don't use that stuff.

I use Simple Green Motorsport engine cleaner/decreaser; it works really well.

we use a degreaser where I work. I use it on my engine bay every once in a blue moon. But I would rather have a beautifully waxed car and clean wheels all the time than worry about a jet black engine bay. Like SoCal said though, good ol' soap and water will do just fine :)

I use a compressed air engine cleaning gun with wand I got from Harbor freight for about $9.00. Then I make up a working solution of 1Z Einszett industrial cleaner (autogeek) and can really controll where on the engine I'm spraying. Swap the alkaline cleaner bottle for plain water and wash down my engine.

Not quite sure what the hell any of that means, or for that matter what went wrong that led to you butchering an earlier post; but I did however enjoy the challenge of trying to read this post. Words like "aeroembolism", I'm not sure if that's even a real word, but I desperately want it to be so that I might find a way to use it in my everyday life. I also would like to baptize my engine as was suggested in your post; hopefully I can get my pastor on board with that one. Who needs mods when your car has been cleansed of it's sins, right?!
