what valve train? maybe a rocker arm(s) are to tight? did you take the dist or cam out?

idk they are the stock rocker arms that arent adjustable. i just torqued them down to spec. it also backfires a little and heats up really quick

well that sounds like cam timing or ign timing is off, did you have the dist out or the camshaft or timing chain?

yea the distributer was out. it only wants to run when the timing is way advanced compared to where it used to be. im thinking it could also be a bad plug or wire. i just changed the plugs a few months back but i could have cracked one or something. if i have the the dist gear one knotch off would it still run "like how it is" or would it not run at all
It'll still run, you can try resetting it. If it's one tooth off, the position will be different than what you might be used to, it might look more advanced or retarded depending on which way it's off.
I would check for a vacuum leak. I had a rough running engine and it turned out to be a vacuum leak and i too thought it was an ignition problem. Take some carb. cleaner and get to spraying. Check the EGR really good for leaks because that is where mine was and it ran real rough and actually showed up as an ignition problem on a scope.
alright ill try that. thanks guys
