I once used some flat washers as spacers on my old truck. I'm sure the Ford engineers had a reason for that plate, but I can't figure out what it's really for. I never noticed a difference in my truck...
I'm not sure either. But to venture a guess, they might do it to put the starter in the right spot, or to keep the convertor from entering the transmission too far. Either way, Ford really had, and has, some dumb ideas.
