I purchased my 70 coupe pretty well disassembled and am trying to get it put back together. The guy had purchased most of the exhaust and it looks like his intention was tu run it out the back with a tailpipe extension like the one pictured. The problem is that in order to get the pipe past the trailer hitch which is welded on the extension will only be an inch away from the gas tank. Is this safe or should I persue another avenue?

Thanks in advance, Garett

I certainly wouldn't want that on my car. Sounds like you need to get that trailer hitch out. It don't belong there!

Although it's definitely not the best situation, I personally don't think that it would ever cause a problem because the exhaust back as far as the gas tank doesn't get super super hot. Honestly though, this is just my thought. I really don't know for sure!

Thanks all, lots to think about. I realized this morning that the exhaust pipe itself is about 3 inches away. It is only the exhaust tip that is an inch away and I would think the heat transfer would be that high. That might make me comfortable using a wrap on the pipe for now. I will eventually get rid of the hitch anyway, just don't know if I have the energy to do it now.

1" was common for the early models. My '66 with factory GT exhaust which used the resonators beside the gas tank has 3/4" clearance between the resonator and the tank on the left hand side. It can't move over since the leaf spring is 3/4" away on the other side. It would have been 1" clearance to a the pipe but the resonator, which is almost the entire length of the tank, is larger diameter. There is/was no insulation on either pipe or tank.

The repro system I am using had to flatten the sides of the resonators a little or else they would have almost touched the tank and spring.
