exhaust leak? i have no idea. 2002 Mustang V6

30726 Views 30 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  samantha_jo_e
car: 2002 v6 automatic
symtoms: occasional ticking noise, usually while idling & continues until it has been running for a while, VERY sluggish, poorER gas mileage

i've been to a couple places, asked a few people...
1st: sounds like exhaust leak @ manifold
2nd: sell it
3rd: get new plugs & wires(???) - done it
4th: all O2 sensors need changed - did front 2 (expensive!)

and thats not even all i've heard... & i have no idea! but i'm def runnin low on $ & answers that WORK! any similar situations, or ideas on what needs checked?

yeah, well the car was rebuilt & the light never worked! i got it scanned at advance & thats what revealed the o2 sensors, but that's all it showed!
I just had what sounds like the same problem on my Ford Expedition. It would sound like a tap, and drive me nuts! I had a code that said that the right bank was running lean (could also be read as an Oxygen sensor...). I would definitely say to check the exhaust manifold gasket (any exhaust shop should be able to do a free check/estimate). What side of the engine is the ticking coming from?

it's coming from the drivers side
Where's the ticking sound coming from?

Under the hood? Under the car? Because it could be your exhaust manifolds (headers) if it's under the hood...

Same thing happened to me. First the ticking, then I found out it was the passenger's side exhaust manifolds. I got it patched up by my welder. Then...the driver's side exhaust manifolds were ticking...So I just decided to buy headers.

How long have you had your car, and how many miles has she ran?

This may be out of the topic, but it could be your lifters that's causing that ticking sound too. You should seafoam your car.

It might be that one of your exhaust manifolds is cracked. If that is so, I would buy a set of after market headers instead of at the dealership as they will charge you up the a$$ for just one of them and labor is expensive too. I had one repleaced on my sixer at the dealership and it ended up costing me around 800 bucks, when I could of had bbk's + installed for almost half the price and replaced both at the same time.

I appreciate it!
After everything gets checked out... if I decide to just get headers what will they sound like?
Should sound a little more agressive than the stock exhaust manifolds and should flow a little better(but not as much, as the factory stock ones flow pretty well.) So expect a minimal gain as far as performance.
oh, we just hit 40,000 miles. i bought the car a year ago with 33,000, so this developed in that amount of time.
My dad refuses to believe that anything leaks, he's put it up on the hydraulic lift & searched for a leak, & couldn't find one. The local exhaust shop "dude" said he had the same car with the same problem, symtoms of a leak but he couldn't find one. So he sold it, & advised us that was the only obvious solution. I'm still gonna get all this checked out though! Daddy can be wrong too I guess... :frustrated:

Well if it comes down to selling it, you can always upgrade to a V8:D I'm sure daddy won't mind lol. Well, hope you get it figured out:bigthumbsup
upgrade to a v8... :D oh yeah.
if it was daddy's MONEY, i sure as heck would!!:gringreen
It's very common in these cars to crack the weld of the catalytic converter in the passenger side, cause the A/C drip hose is just above it. An inexpensive weld or aftermarket catted pipe (like Pypes) may solve the problem.
I bought my BBK Headers really cheap, more cheap than any other site...

look for 'em here:

LMPerformance's Mustang Parts, Camaro Parts, Corvette Parts, GTO Parts, Trans Am Parts and more.

Once replaced, I would go with the Seafoam next.

The sound's more aggressive.

Didn't notice any HP because I was running with my K&N CAI at the same time, so I really couldn't tell.

One's shiney, discoloration in the future (chrome). One's heat-treated, minor-discoloration (ceramic coated).

I bought the cermaic coated shorties.:bigthumbsup
i'll have to save up a lil bit :D
It's all good.

I've done the search for you. Trust me, I'm a 19yr. old student that's on a budget, and I still manage to create miracles with money...lol
