Explorer Motor in '66 - need some help

1328 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  61cruser
Hi all,

I've purchased a motor with low miles, picked up the rear-end, drive-shaft and wiring harness all for a good price.

Now, it gets tougher as I've never done this level of job before. I'm hoping with some educated advisers (you) I can pull it off.

The suspension/steering is all set, got V8 stuff. Mating to (hopefully) a 3-spd top-loader trans.
________
I know I need:

- motor mounts
- a new flywheel (?)
- electric fuel pump
- Steel distributor gear (if I use a distributor)

What else do I need to know?

I hope to use the fuel injection, but I don't see many guys doing that - is there a reason?

Many thanks for any help you can offer, everyone!

Hello. :) What year Explorer is this motor out of? :)
The injection will requre an EFI fuel pump and return line otherwise you already have all you need. Some people are purists and dont want to modernize thier mustangs, some think it wont work and some lack the technical ability to effect the upgrade.
Echoing Veronica, what year exploder? you said you had the wiring but you will also need the engine computer to keep the injection. Some explorers dont have a "distributor" in a conventional sense so the year of your donor parts is quite relevant. Why do all this and not use a 4 or 5 speed trans?

You also need the cooling system from the exploder. You can adapt the classic rad but I would prefer the larger rad. Also the auto Trans will need a trans cooler which should be with the cooling system.
You will need to adapt the exhaust to your needs. If you are keeping the classic suspension you will need to find a 289 oil pan with front pickup.

Thanks for the replies.

The Explorer is a '98, so the GT40P heads and so on. I can get the ECM - it's part of the deal.

I did read that the Oilpan and timing cover need swapped for front sump pan/dispstick pickup. I'll likely get a larger radiator and electric fan.

Why a 3spd? That's what is in the car currently. No funds for anything else right now. I'd love a 4 speed later down the road. Motor swapping is one of many, many swaps on this car right now.

I'll check those links out Moses 7797.

Thanks guys. I'll have more questions soon ;)

I understand the funding being tough but it would be a great time to install a 4R70W right now since everything else is going in so you dont have to double work yourself.
Find one from either a V6 98-2003 6 cylinder mustang or the one from the same mountineer you got the engine from. Its not hard to make it all work and will save you a lot of money in the long run....the v6 trannys are tough as they come and hardly raced and seldom towed and are a direct bolt in. As money allows I understand ....you can find them in pull a a part yards too and few if anyone knows how gerat they are in an older classic. If you get one I will show you how to do it cheap. Either way youre off to a good start it looks like.

Most generous offer, sir. I will look into it for sure. I scored a great deal on the Motor & Rearend, so in time, I may be able to grab a tranny too. I have a guy that wants my 3spd for his Model A. So, at least I know I can sell what I have ;)

Just an FYI the motor from an explorer isn’t the best choice, you need to replace the valve springs because they are not designed for high RPM. You will need special headers for the GT40P heads due to the clearance of the shock mounts. Ditch the wiring harness from the explorer and go with a 5.0 harness with a mass air flow computer preferable A9L. last the rear end on explorers have an offset so the drive shaft won’t be totally centered again, get one from a mustang.

It's actually a really good choice on a budget, especially when he said he got a good package deal.
He didn't say he was changing the cam so really no reason to change the valve springs.
The 98' is a mass air flow motor so no reason to worry about the wiring harness as its for the 5.0 motor.
This guy is not the first to do the 8.8. Swap and for the money it's not half bad! From what people that have done it say, they do not have problems with the slight offset.

Doesn't the 4R70W need the '65-'66 trans tunnel modified to fit? I was told to stick with an AOD or AODE since they fit without tunnel mods. What be the facts?
