F3 GT40 heads require headbolt reducers?????

Just got me a set of GT40 F3ZZ heads with 5 angle valve job comp springs retainers and locks milled 10 for $320.00. What's this about headbolt reducers??? Hate to sound dumb but never heard of it.:?:

They are used when you are putting 351 heads on a 302. The 351's have a 1/2" head bolt while the 302 has a 7/16". Either a bushing or a stepped head bolt can be used. Do those heads require them?

It depends if the heads were originally on a 351W or a 302. 351Ws use 1/2" head bolts, 302s use 7/16" head bolts. If the heads you have have been drilled for 1/2" head bolts, you need to use reducer bushings or stepped bolts. Here is a link to the bushings, and you can use standard 7/16" head bolts with them:

While I'm on the link kick, these head bolts would serve you well:

ARP High Performance Series Cylinder Head Bolt Kits 154-3601 - HEX

ARP High Performance Series Cylinder Head Bolt Kits 154-3701 - 12-POINT

Or, you can get the head bolts and bushings as a kit:

ARP High Performance Series Cylinder Head Bolt Kits 154-3605 - HEX

ARP High Performance Series Cylinder Head Bolt Kits 154-3705 - 12-POINT

I'm actually using F3ZE heads off of a 351W (Lightning) on my 302 right now. I went with stepped bolts instead of bushings:

ARP Pro Series Cylinder Head Bolt Kits 254-3708 - 12-POINT

They're definitely not necessary and expensive, but that's what I choose back in the day. If I ever do a similar build I will just use 7/16" bolts with bushings.

ok thanks guys, i think mine are 7/16
Just measure, if you have 7/16" then those came off a 302.

ARP head bolts are a nice upgrade.
