Just picked it up from the dealer and drove around town! I absolutely love this car and the Shaker 1000 is awesome. Unfortunately no My Color, I gave the salesman a bit of a hard time and he threw me some free oil change coupons. The only thing the previous owner did to it was straight pipes. It does not have the original tires either, the previous owner got sick and it sat for 3 years which is why it only has 8,000 miles on it. The MSRP was over 38,000cdn and I got it for 18,000.. I'll never buy a new car!

I used to have a 96 Camaro Z28 auto, the car feels faster but it does not have as much in the low rpm range as the Z had.

Buddy of mine has a 97 Trans Am WS6, 6speed LT1. I know he's done some mods to it like a chip, under drive pully, intake, and maybe a couple other bolt ons that I don't know about. How do you guys think I would fair in a race? (not that i'll probably ever do that unless we go to a drag strip sometime!) but it would be nice to know for bragging rights haha.

Welcome to the site and nice looking car. CAI and tune is an easy, must do mod. You'll get an extra 25HP. Not sure what gears you have, but swapping to 3.73s or 4.10s will help the low-end pickup.

Nice car. Sounds a lot like the deal I got on mine. I've really been lookin into quick power upgrades and an intake and tune really are the fastest cheapest quick upgrades you can get.

Congrats on your new ride. And with all things being equal the LS1 is faster. But things are never equal. Get some mods, learn how to drive and you can beat him. I cant wait to goto the track and see some lightly modded LS1's beating the new Camaro SS's.

My bad I should learn how to read. He has the LT1. Add a CAI and tune and with good driving you should win.

Sorry to OP for kinda taking this off subject but I've seen a couple ls1 camaros take out the new camaros out at our local track. I never really thought that 700 pounds would make up for 75hp.

if it was a 2000-02 ws6 it would be diff. I think with a intake and tune u would take him.
He could take him to lunch . That Trans Am will hand you your ass. I am sorry I have my experieces with these cars. They are cheap to mod and they can go fast. The weak link is the rear ends and the trannys. I had CAI and Bama race tune and could not catch these cars. I added a 100 shot and they can not touch me now even if they have a 100 shot as well. I raced my nemisis at the track last night and he ran a 12.496 and I ran a 12.190. You need mods and a good amount of suspension LCA`S , adjustable UCA,and drag radials . Yes DRAG radials are suspension mod. I would also get a 1 piece aluminum drive shaft and safety loop. Long Tube headers ar a big help as well. You want to beat him , I would be glad to help.

These cars are no joke , never underestimate them. I am working on staying ahead of these guys all the time at my track.

The 4.6 engine best torque is at higher RPM; 4.10 gears will get you there quicker.

I would start saving for a supercharger or turbo, then you will eat anything on the road, a 500-600 hp s197 is common nowadays.

yeah you guys that think the LT1's are slow are crazy. I had one in my Camaro and it has more low end then the Stang, they are also a lot tricker to drive.

By the end of the 1/4 the stang will catch up and pass, but out of the hole it would easily be the Z

I am not doing any mods anytime soon, but at least now i know where to start! Wife will kill me if I start doing mods. I need to let things settle down a bit first lol.

The 97 had the LT1 in it I believe. LT1=lame. With an CAI and a tune i think you could easily take this dude.
+1 i raced a ws6 on the highway one night- and we both had 2 people in our cars.. I had intake/tune.. He had some form of exhaust because it was extremely loud..

He got the jump, and i pulled on him and ended up passing him.. Granted it was not a fly by- i did steadily pass him a nice amount- when i let off i was a good 1-2cars ahead. I guess he had fatter passengers then me =) haha

I happen to own both. the Z is an LT1 (gawd I hate the optispark but i digress)

The heads in the LT1 are the achilles heel but, they respond very nicely to a CAI and long tubes with 3 inch exhaust. It's 350 cubic inches so the scavenging does more for the low end than with the 281.

Also, a tune helped. The LT1 has more low end torque and sounds mean. The 281 doesn't have the optispark (did i already say that?)

with DR's on the back, the LT1 with bolt ons will take you even with a CAI/tune. It will be close though. But, it all depends how tired the engine is. Mine has been rebuilt but stock cam however new valve springs.

If you are looking for a Camaro or Bird to add to your garage, get the LS1 if you can. Yes, the heads flow better but it doesn't have that optispark. I like the looks of the stang better as well. The Mustangs just look better with louvers, and lowered, and stripes. Gen 4 camaros can't really have appearance mods done, it doesn't look as good.
