Sorry to sound stupid, but can you tell me what a chin splitter is? Is it purely a cosmetic mod or does it serve a purpose?

My splitter is purely cosmetic . made by me and installed by me .the only thing I bought was the carbon fiber vinyl .every thing else was lying around at work .
