Fix for excessive "breathing"/overflow from differential?

4016 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  3XPASS
I know it's been talked about before, as a result of spirited driving or more so track days, but don't know that I've seen an answer. I was wondering if anyone has come up with a solution, or if Ford offers anything (anything helpful, that is, not just "normal condition" response). Or is this not a concern?
The length of my axle is most definitely moist.
That's what she said...

Replacing the diff cover will relocate the breather to the top of the diff, thereby reducing the overflow.

... or you can get the Ford turkey baster breather extension. I believe that if you take your car to the dealer and complain, they'll fix it under warranty (if you still have one).

Search for it - it's on here somewhere!

Or you can just buy one yourself. I did...a lot easier IMO than wasting all that time with the dealer.

The part number is AR3Z4A058B for the turkey baster fix (you'll see why it's called that when you get one).

Once you get under your car it takes about five minutes to replace the regular breather.
We did the Ford part baster on a couple 5.0's today in my garage.

Literally 3-4 minutes. $50 for the part.

Funny though... one car had the vent on the left, the other on the right.

On one it cleared the exhaust by 3/4 inch.. on the other by 1.5 inches, once the frame hit the bump stops.

Pitty for anyone that has it actually touch the exhaust at the track... it appears it will melt the top of the vent and prevent it from venting.

We'll see if it holds enough fluid to "catch it" before leaking out all over the car at the next track day.

The top of the vent is about level with the top of the diff. cover.

Ford product and engineering... pretty funny and pathetic at the same time.

Update.

The baster on the 2011 melted on the install that had the vent on the left hand side.

Mine is fine so far as it was 1.5 inches away from the pipes and not .75 or so.

It is only an official fix for the 2005-2010 so far... maybe it is because the pipes are in different locations? I have no history with those.

People using this baster solution might want to review this.

If it melts the top of it we fear it suffocating the breather.

The user of the melted solutions will use the same base and just run a fuel line up a foot or so and tie-wrap it for now.

Turkey Baster indeed. I found this on TMS while searching for the part number (good photos). Installation looks pretty close to the exhaust.

Diff spit up a bit on track; cause for concern? - Page 2 - MustangForums.com

I think a long rubber hose and a clamp to underside of the body would give it some extra expansion room. The added height should stop it from overflowing.

I recently put a GT500 diff cover on mine, so I have two breathers - one at the top of the diff and the turkey baster. The baster hits the exhaust, so I'll have to replace it with a plug at some point.
I did the turkey baster part from TSB 10-3-7, and like bryce, my axle vent was on the driver side right under the exhaust pipe. A week after replacing it, I noticed fluid still overflowed from the turkey baster after a hard driving session, so obviously it's not a fool proof fix.

A cheaper alternative to aftermarket diff covers is to get the boss 302 diff cover, which has a breather valve at the top of the cover. The crappy thing is like our stock GT covers, they do not come with fill or drain plugs.

My question for the actual "Mustang people" here, what is the design change, exhaust-wise between the 2010 and the 2011? Didn't they both go up and around and back down over the rear "long thing" before?

It seems that maybe it didn't entirely solve the problem with the 2005-2010, unless there was a serious design change down there.

Ford is hilarious. Good bang for the buck, but just so many crappy design/implementations that would only have cost $1-5 in many cases.

i had my gears changed from 3:31 to 3:73 plus a truetrac and a FRPP cover. the shop used synthetic fluid when they filled it after the changes. i got home and had fluid leaking out of the breather on the passenger side of the rear axle. i brought the car back to the shop and the shop owner thought they may have over filled the rear end. they drained and refilled it to the proper level with the same synthetic fluid. i got home and it was leaking again. i brought it back to the shop and and found out it was the type of fluid. the cheap stuff he put in had to of been foming up. thats all we could come up with. The shop owner ordered and installed mobil one 75w-140 and i haven't had a problem since. i did not see the bottles of mobil one but after i got home 100 miles later no leaks. that was two weeks ago and still no leaks.:bigthumbsup to recap, check the brand of fluid or change the brand of fluid if you are leaking from the vent.
