Hi!

Has anyone used the Flaming River steering box on their 65 or 66? If so, was it an improvement over a properly adjusted standard box?

Many thanks!

Just rebuilt my 67 original box (manual steering). It was way easy and made a huge difference. Bought the pats on line. Just followed the instructions in the shop manual.

The difficulty is that preload must be set in the 5-10 inch-lb range. If you don't have the proper torque wrench, they are hard to come by.

I got around this by clamping a set of small Vice grips on the shaft, then hooked a digital fish scale to this at 2 inches from center. 3 lbs at 2 inches is 6 inch-lbs. Easy as pie. Just make sure the shaft is vertical in order to eliminate the weight of the Vice grips.

Also need access to a press to push out/in the needle bearings.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies. This is all in connection with my planned 6 to 8 conversion of the car.

Regards,
