I got a new Ford Racing 90mm cold air intake (same as the Shelby GT) and tuner off of ebay for $175. Submitted my voucher for the tuner and got it the next day. The first month no problems. Then the pinging started. Below is a copy of the email I sent to Ford Racing after I spoke with them on the phone back on June 24th. I called on the 5th of July as was told they were still waiting to hear from the Tune specialist. Still no word from them. Any thoughts, Glad I still have my AM discount code handy.

I live in a Hi alt ( 2500 ft) Hi heat area. So California Hi desert. Up to 115 degree temperatures during the summer and very low humidity.
91 octane highest available.

Driven 500 miles since tune installed. Octane sensor is on. Lots of pinging with it off.

During cooler temps. 65-70 deg. No pinging heard at any time

Mod temp. 70 to 85/90 range No pinging under normal driving heard. When running the car. 2 or 3 short pings right after shift.

Now higher temps are here 100 ish the last couple of days. Pinging heard right after almost every shift. even when driving it very easy. Stronger and longer duration during spirited driving.

The Fuel

The 91 Octane in your area is it a blended Fuel say with 10% Ethenol?? This may be the culprit or Octane level is not as advertised. I live in Southern Ohio and 100+ during the Summer with horrible humidity and no ping with straight gas. I run Brenspeed's 91 Tune they live in the same climate zone so maybe call them or AM and see what they say since they have tunes all over the States and may have delt with the higher altitudes. We can get non-blended fuel here in Ohio as well as blended so I always go pure as I have had this issue 1 time with blended fuel and as stated no ping with just straight 91. The cooler temps do help though.
Hope this helps.

T Wayne Thanks for the input. I tried a couple different gas companies and Shell has been the best. I guess I need to start bugging the guy at Ford Racing. Squeaky wheel.
I read your other post about the Gov's finical situation. I hope it gets worked out quickly. Luckily for me the Government likes to keep airplanes flying and not running into each other.
Stay safe and Thank You for your service!

No Problem

I like the FRPP products but the Tuner I did not for the lack of adjustability. The Tuner you have does it have a USB port?? The SCT is just supported by some many top notch Tuners and the ability to get updates via your PC is just a + in my book.
Yes I was venting a little about the DC situation.
I Really thought my Feta Cheese and Goat Farming comments would get a laugh.
Keep us posted and let us know how things worked out.
Hopefully you will get into a better glide path and out of this turbulance.

No USB. The tune comes on a SD flash memory card. I sent my contact at FRPP an email this morning but as typical have not heard back. I am awaiting approval from my CEO to order a SCT from AM.
I went ahead and put everything back to stock last night and it ran perfect so I am going to keep it like that until I get it sorted out.
I did laugh at the Feta cheese reference.
Funny thing at work this week they figured out they have an extra $170K they have to spend on OT. We have been working the last month understaffed and poof the OT is flying around like crazy. Gota love the Gov. Could use it to buy some parts but I'm to old for that foolishness. I like my weekends to much.

Vacation

Yes it's nice to get away. The OT money will be good for the Holidays. The Mustang is a hobby but I have built mine up over time and I keep the miles down not a daily driver plus the Winters in Ohio can be brutal so 31,000 on 2006 is'nt bad. Hopefully your CEO can work out a deal for you the CAI is a nice MOD but as you know the Tune is King.

Just an update.....
Found a gas station that sells 93 octane($7 a gallon) and 100 octane($7.50 a gallon). So I have been running a blend of 91 & 100. That fixed most of the problem. Still getting a little pinging when it's hot out and I am making short trips back to back. Finally got a response from FRPP and after lots of questions via email, they sent me a new tune. Just got it loaded so I still don't know if it is fixed. But it is a mute point.
Drum roll here
My lovely wife of 23 years yesterday is
1. Getting Me my 4:10 gears for our anniversary. I have an appointment in 2 1/2 weeks to get them installed. and
2. Getting me an SCT tuner from AM for my Birthday which is Thursday. Ordering it tomorrow.
What a women.

Pinging is'nt good for your Engine, I hate to say this but I'd ditch the Tuner and get the JLT CAI SCT Tuner Combo from AM. Now some are claiming that the 10% Ethenol may be causing the problem, Im not buying that. In N.Y. ALL Our Gas Contains 10% Ethenol. Im using 93 Octane SUNOCO with NO Problems at all with My 93 Octane Tune and it has the 10% Ethenol in it. I think it's all in your Tune, and using too high of an Octane is'nt good either. BAMA has been writing some of the Best Tunes for awhile and they know Our Mustangs inside and out, I'd go with them. Also when you have a Problem there Right on it:bigthumbsup

Good Choice

The SCT is going to be the best move either way and like I have stated I run Brenspeed Tunes but they support the SCT. I have options like many other folks do and the fact it reads and clears trouble codes it's a tool as well. The fact if I wanted to run AM Tunes I can and they can be trusted. So bottom line you waited weeks and the above metioned Tuners would have had you squared away in days. The 4.10's are nice addition.
Keep us posted and let us know how your hooking up and the new Tune.

$7.00 for a gallon of 93 octane shell gasoline?????? Oh my lord! How much is the 91 octane from shell? I thought paying $4.25 for Shell 93 was bad. I won't complain no more. :hihi:

I'll say!

You are going to love the 4.10s. Just did a little hard driving this morning and I swear 0-80 seems like 6 seconds. I know it can't be, but damn if it doesn't seem that way.

As for the Bama tunes, it's been dyno proven that they are head and shoulders above the FRPP tune. Actually, I remember seeing a thread by Chris Rose (from Bama/AM) and they dyno'd the stock, FRPP, and a Bama tune and the FRPP tune was the worst(least hp/tq) of them all believe it or not.

Shell 91 is right at $4. The 93&100 is at a VP Racing gas at a dairy across town. Been paying cash so there is no paper trail. LOL

Just completed My order. Cannot wait. I would believe it. This 2nd tune seems better. But I am glad I'm moving over to Bama
