Over the weekend a dubious source claimed the next Shelby Mustang would get Ford's new naturally aspirated 7.0L V8 slotted for use in the F-250.

Today, Motor Trend smashed the made up rumor with actual proof the ZL1-challenging GT500 is likely to use a supercharged derivative of the GT350's 5.2-liter flat-plane crank V8. One of the publication's well placed sources sent over a grainy photo of the 5.2-liter Voodoo crowned by a Ford Performance supercharger kit; in the Mustang GT the same kit is capable of tacking an additional 200-hp on the stock 5.0-liter Coyote V8, imagine what it could do to the Voodoo's stock 526 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque.

Obviously it's unclear if this is legitimately the GT500 or not, but a few weeks ago the publication did spot a heavily camouflaged Shelby prototype prancing around Arizona backroads in the company of a Camaro ZL1.

Adding fuel to the fire, 2017 is the 50th anniversary of Carol Shelby's original GT500, what better way is there to commemorate the most badass Mustang's ever made than with an excessive helping of horsepower.
