I need new rotors for my '89. When I went to the parts store, they came back with two different sizes.
278mm and 256mm

Which one do I need for my car and why are there two sizes?

From my experience, the 278mm is for 5.0 lx's and the 256mm is for the 2.3 lx's.
I would double check to make sure. Just measure it. Take your wheel off and wrap a piece of string around the outer circumference of the rotor. Then measure the length of that piece of string.
If it is about 873mm long, then it is a 278mm rotor.
If it is about 804mm long, then it is a 256mm rotor.
Hope this helps.

You have to get the smaller one. I don't know why they list both as options for the 2.3L, because the larger rotor doesn't fit properly. I tried them because Autozone didn't have the others in stock, but I had to exchange them later.

If you upgrade to the 5.0 spindle, then you can use the larger rotor.
