FRPP TB Worth the Price??

912 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  [email protected]
I have an 06 GT with MagnaCharger, Comp Cams NSR cams, Steeda CAI, JBL SS headers, 4.10's, etc. Last mod installed was the MagnaCharger in Feb 2010 and tuned with an e-mail tune with SCT hand held tuner. I've been busy building a house the last couple of years and now it's time to play around with my Stang a little bit. I have a local speed shop lined up for a Dyno Tune and was wondering is installing an FRPP 63 mm TB would help. They are expensive so if it's not worth it I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

What horsepower are you at Chris?
I don't really know.....hense the dyno tune. I believe that it's probably pushing around 400 to 450 HP at the crank.

What pulley size? Stock is 3.3", I have a 3". I don't think you need a throttle body until you are working with at least a 2.8" pulley. Moving to the 2.8" pulley is gonna give you some belt slip issues I believe, unless you are the luckiest Magnacharger (MP112) owner in the world. If you go with the 2.8" pulley, you would probably want to get a 90mm idler for your tensioner and send the 2.8" pulley to Carbiniteracing to coat it. Bottom line is, that TB isn't where the money should be going right now IMO. The stock TB is good to 500rwhp give or take a few and unless you have a non-slipping 2.8" pulley, it's a waste of time. The dynotune is going to net you some horsepower or atleast it should, over the email tune you got. I would say my car frickin hauls a whole lotta a$$ and I'm only using the 3" pulley. Ron over at BlueCollarPerformance had a larger TB on his car. He was sitting at over 475rwhp though and he was also running an 8 rib IIRC.

Thanks for the info SheizaSoSay. I am running the stock pully with the lowest boost level. I didn't want to push the block without forging it. Per your advice I'll skip the TB and just get the dynotune. She runs great now.....but a couple extra ponnies could always help...

Just as a side note...I got the 3" pulley and I run the ever living sh1t out of my car on stock internals. I would think about a better belt tensioner. Sqidd has one that is cheap and I haven't heard even the slightest peep of a problem with it. He takes 2 stock tensioners and joins them basically. In fact, I just got done talking to him about me possibly needing one. Depends on how my tensioner looks when I get home. It might be bent...not sure yet.

Some Have

Some have had good results with the Elderbrock Idler Arm Re-Inforcement kit it's about 50 bucks. Now this is on the 8PSI range.

Check Amazon for the Elederbrock belt tension kit it may be cheaper.

Just another option.

If you have a Dremel tool with attachments and various grit sand papers going down to around say 400 or so you can always clean the OEM throttle body up. The center divider between the blades should be "knife edge" sharp to help split the air smoothly as it passes over. Little things like that would be worth doing if you also enjoy working with metal.
