What can you burn for octane level in a 1987 5.0 GT, some people advice High Test gas, while others say you can get away with regular.

My Dad use to complain about pinging from the engine when he ran regular gas in the car when it was brand new. So he always put high test or premium gas in it and said it made a world of difference, no pigging.

Car has 140000km on the dial now.

Regular gas is 87 octane, while high test is 91,92 octane in Canada.

I am planning on driving this car back from back east to Saskachewan this summer and do not really want to be buying the highest priced gas along the way.

But if it makes that much of a difference in mileage per tank and performance then I guess it will be the expensive stuff.

And what can you run in this car for blended gas and at what percentages would that be?

Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated, by the way the car is bone stock.

+1 on the timing. retard it a bit and try 87 octane. it should stop the pinging.

Regular would probobly be fine, except if it has Ethanol on it. You may wan't to run gas without Ethanol in it.

I have done a lot of reading on this site since I posted this and there are a few post relating to Octane levels.

The majority of post I have read use the higher octane levels, it seems there are less problems going that route.

There have been claims to increased mileage as well as the engines seem to run better on the higher priced gas.

So I will just run the high test in it for now till I get the car back to Saskatoon and then I can have a look at the timing.

You get no benefit from higher octane fuel if you don't have the timing set higher to make use of it. And even at that, it will not increase mileage and will only give you a handful of horsepower over what 87 octane and 12-14* of timing will give you. It isn't worth it.

If the car is bone stock then give it what a bone stock car is meant for which is 87 octane. If you are really picky then look for a station that does not mix it with ethanol.

87 Octane

I will start the trip out with the regular gas in it and see how that goes, if i do not get any pigging then thats what I will run in it. Do not feel like wasting money for nothing.

Just remember my Dad saying it did not run well with regular gas in it, time will tell.

Will let you know how it turns out after driving 6000km back home later this summer.

Cheers Bruce
