Future mods....what do you think?

Right now im running a stock 4.6 in my 2007 GT convertible/w 5 speed auto aside from the Bullitt mufflers. I have been considering doing some mild mods to bring it pretty much up to 300 rwhp. I pretty much ruled out long tube headers as this will be a daily driver and keeping the stock rear since I dont plan on doing any drag racing other then maybe a track day meet once in a while.

What I am considering is going with the Ford Racing camshafts, Ford Racing CAI and a Bama tune. Not sure how the Bullits will sound as they are not much louder than stock but I am also considering the Ford Racing 500 mufflers, which I think has a nice bark to them. Chrome valve covers too. Yea, I know, it wont go faster with them...lol. I could never understand why Ford wouldnt include either a painted or chromed set as standard equipment on their Mustangs.

Any thoughts on these mods?

I like cams. I like supechargers more :)
Yea, so do I but not the 5-8k associated with them, especially coming up on retirement...LOL.

Ruffy07,

Sounds like a good plan! Are you looking at the FRPP Hot Rod cams? These cams are awesome for any street car and will give you a nice boost in power that you're looking for. Of course paired with a Bama custom SF3 tuner, they behave very well for the street and almost drive like stock. Then you'll also have a nice rumble when you're idling and the power to back it up!

I say go with the plan you're already looking at. I'm sure you'll be really happy with the results. Let me know if you have any questions too!

Yes, those are the cams that I am looking at. Too bad AM only has the Pro Scan tuner with the Ford Racing CAI/muffler kit. I would much prefer the Bama tuner. I will be getting the parts from AM anyway most likely sometime after Christmas. I also considered the Comp cams but ever since my Chevy days back in the 70's I have always been big on factory hot rod parts. Heads, cams, rear end gears, clutch, etc was all Chevy factory high performance parts back then for me. Ford seems to have a pretty good list of their own stuff as well.

Stopped by Hurricane Performance today here in town. They had 2 mustangs with the mods that I was looking at. Both had the Ford hot rod cams and flowmaster mufflers. 1 of them also had BBK long tubes so I was able to get a pretty accurate sound. They both sounded great but I think im going with the Ford 500 mufflers. The have a louder sound then the flow masters. Both cars have had their Ford Racing cams in them for a while and both owners are happy with the results. Cash flow will decide on whether I add the long tubes into the mix. The stang with the long tubes had the cats deleted. I want the cats so im not too sure about whether the long tubes will provide that much added HP. Decisions, decisions.....:headscratch:
Either way, Hurricane Performance quoted me a pretty reasonable price for the work. Looks like ill be getting it done maybe next month...cant wait!!

I have most of the mods you want and then some, you can see my sig for details.

Ruffy07,

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Ford Racing CAI, but we've found that the best preforming CAI's on the market are Airaid, JLT, Steeda, etc. We do have Bama/Airaid combo packages that you can pick up, too. As I'm sure you already know, buying a SF3 Bama tuner will enroll you into our Free Tunes for Life program. This gets you free tune adjustments for any new bolt-on mods you add in the future. Then just buy the Ford Racing Mufflers separate, which is what I would do to get the most power and best sound out of your Mustang. Again, there's nothing wrong with the Ford Racing kit, if that's the direction you want to go in.

Headers- we do see an increase of power with LT headers on the 3v Mustangs, even with high-flow catalytic converts. When paired with the FRPP Hot Rod cams, you can really see the LT's shine.

Hope this helps!

Definitely get the Ford Racing FR500S mufflers. I love mine.

Im still looking around while I mull over my options but while I was looking over the FRPP website I came across this statement while looking at the hot rod cams: "Ford Racing's Pro-Cal tunes DO NOT support this part. An aftermarket tuner and custom calibration will need to be sourced."

So, maybe all of this tuning stuff is new to an old dog like me but I would think that a Pro-Scan tool that comes with the FRPP CAI/muffler package that Ford sells would work on their hot rod cams as well. I may just have to get the pieces seperately. Looks like a call to the dyno tuner guy is in order tomorrow.

I am also considering the Brenspeed Detroit rocker cams as well, especially since the car is an automatic with 3:31 gears. I have no plans on going with a stiffer gear since I do a good portion of interstate running. I dont want to make a rushed decision but to choose the best set-up for my needs.

Decided to go with the Brenspeed Detroit Rockers and FRPP CAI. If their HP increase claims are accurate the package should give me at least 30 more RWHP. LaMotta Performance in Longwood FL is installing them and they will be doing a dyno as well so I will see exactly what the outcome is. New plugs and chrome valve covers will round it out. Ill know in 2 weeks.....:racer:

Shane, while I did order the cams from Brenspeed I ordered the Chrome valve covers from AM so dont feel left out of the mix totally....lol
with those cams you will need at least 3.73's gears. you will lose alot of bottom end. couple of guys in our club have those and frpp hot rod cams and have 3.73's and auto and they have trouble off the line, all are thinking of 4.10 gears, already have long tube headers, no cats, frpp intake.

Im not looking to drag race this car, just to take advantage of the available HP. Brenspeed did say that I will lose a little at the lower end and I am fine with that. From what I have read the Rockers are a better alternative then the FRPP Hot Rod cams lower end wise and increased HP wise and since the ProCal tool no longer supports the FRPP cams I feel that I made a good choice. I would loved to have a set of Kooks longtubes but the supply of green ran out...LOL. Ill find out next week when its all together and dynoed.

CAI and tune and cams are a good choice and should get you the power levels you're looking for. With similar air conditions here on dyno days, similar cars made around or over 300 hp.

Any reputable tuner will give you a good tune that takes advantage of the cam profiles. Bama would have taken good care of your needs with whatever cam you went with.
FWIW, 'canned' tunes as part of a 'package' are not the best results; you really should have a tune that is tweaked for your specific car to get the most out of everything. And stated HP ratings on product sites are most often overrated, and they don't accumulate on top of each other 100%. Adds for this CAI will get you 15 hp, cans 40 hp, headers 40 hp..etc...you're not going to get 95hp from those cumulatively.

And, just a note on the 'retirement' comment...you GOTTA have some fun with your toys! Just keep it within reason and you'll be fine. We won't let all the young-uns have all the fun :)

Enjoy! :bigthumbsup

I would be satisfied to get that much at the rear wheel.

I agree. If I believed every HP rating I saw with an ad then I could possibly have an 800 HP beast for under 2k...LOL

I wont tell you how much I have spent on my bike this past year as well..:nogrinner

You might want to check into an one piece aluminum driveshaft as well.
I think the Hot Rod cams are my best mod for the buck. The idle is amazing! Add headers, cat delete x pipes, and Flowmaster axle-back and you have a sound you will never forget. I just spent 2600 of your money if you have to pay a tech. Unfortunatley you will need a CIA and a tune. I think for the total of 3200 you have the car you discribed! If you like the bullets its well under 3k. You can thank me after your fist red light. People will look at you like WTF! :yelpleased:

Picked up the car from LaMotta Performance Wed afternoon. Man, the car runs like a raped ape now. The Detroit Rocker cams sound and perform great. The chrome valve covers give the engine a nice pop. The FRPP CAI looks great as well. Took it out for a test and with the TCS and OD off the car went sideways a bit when it shifted from 1st to 2nd (5sp auto). Chirped the tires going into third. All this with 3:31 gears. Probably go with 3:73's next spring.
