I have a 2005 V6 Mustang with a gas gauge that is reading 180 degree off.... The gauge appears to be working., but the needle is pointing straight down... I tried Chevron fuel treatment... Is it the gauge cluster, defective gauge, sending unit, sending unit needs to be removed and cleaned, voltage issue? Any ideas ? Thanks Speedawg

I recently had this exact thing happen on my 06 and it was the stepper motor that drives the gauge. It cost $20 and took time and soldering skills to replace.

I had to remove the cluster to replace the stepper but if you have a medium skill level you should be able to handle it.

If you have the cluster out, you may want to replace all of them with the newer ones. It's a common problem in the early S197's. There are YouTube videos to guide you through it.
