I want to remove my GT badges that are on the front fenders and paint them black in anticipation of my black rims. How do they come off. Are they “bolted” on and taped? Any pitfalls to watch out for?

How about the “fake” gas cap in the middle of the trunk. What’s the best way to get that off without screwing it or the paint up?

if they are anything like the v6 pony badge,just take some fishing line and cut the double sided tape holding it on.there should be a couple guide pieces on the back to make sure the emblem is put back on straight.
same with the trunk lid badge,taped on.

+1 - That be it. (As far as the fender badges go at least, I haven't taken the fake gas cap off) GT badges are just double sided tape and two guide pins. I also used fishing line to take them off.

Yep, pretty much what they said! A heat gun and fishing line, and then Goo-Gone to get the crud from the double sided tape off. I think I've read that the fake gas cap is the same thing, with two guide holes as well. Eventually I'm going to pull my GT gas cap off and put the V6 pony gas cap on.

How are you planning on reattaching them? When I put the 1965 GT badges on, I used the emblem adhesive glue from 3M. You might be better off using double sided tape, though.

Surprisingly at least for me and it was warm the day I did it which I think helped as well, just use a hair dryer to warm up the 3M tape behind the GT emblem and then take some fishing line to run behind it ( make sure you use at least 12 lb test or so ) then they just popped off, clean the area with some bag/tar stuff , wiped off with some alcohol and your ready to install the new ones.

It might on small adhesive areas like the emblems on the side. There is no way it would hold up to the amount of adhesive on the rear "gas cap".


Sqidd, the rear emblem is a ROYAL pain. I tried heavy fishing line, but the adhesive behind it was too tough for me to be able to work the line through. I resorted to using one of those flat plastic spatula things and a hair dryer. I heated up the adhesive and gently pushed my way through it. I will tell you now that Goo Gone will not remove the leftover adhesive. It didn't for me, anyway. :laugh: I tried vinegar, WD40, nail polish remover, all to no avail. The thing that worked the best for me was straight isopropyl alcohol, but I even had a tough time with that.

Good luck and trust me, you'll need it with trying to remove that fake gas cap! :shigrin

if you remove the fake gas cap, are there holes left behind in the trunk lid? I like the look of the mustang ithout the Gas cap and i would take mine off but i dont want to be left with holes. Thats an Eye-Sore.

I wanted to black out everything on my 06 GT. I did A LOT of research on removing the side badges, gas cap & front pony and determined it would be easier to paint them while on the car. I masked around everything, covered the car to protect from overspray and sanded everything. I then used flat black spray, a few coats semi-gloss black spray, and a couple clear coats. Everything came out great and has held up for a few months now.

I then tinted the rear lights and brake light and installed the black trim from American Muscle. I also changed the front blinkers to the black ones and used spray tint on the front fog lamps (don't do this if you plan on using them, light does not pass very well with the spray tint, I never use mine!) & rear side lights. Will be powder coating rims all black next week.

I have received a few compliments and I think it came out great. So I suggest looking into this method if you plan on paiting them.

Hmmmm...:scratchchin Interesting, but i dont know if i could take that chance with overspray. But im not looking to paint the badges, just wanna know how to remove the Rear Gas Emblem.

Yeah I haven't removed my rear badge so I don't know how bad it is back there. Did you ever try cleaning it off with a napthalene(sp) based cleaner?

Yep. There are two small holes underneath the keyhole.

I used the string/floss and hair dryer method to remove and paint mine balck. It's the simplest method I can think of. The fake gas cap comes off the same way I put a CDC blackout over the holes. And I used a 2010 Black-chrome pony for the front grille. All chrome... all gone. :bigthumbsup

I hate this kind of work, I would rather put a motor in the car! But I need to do it.

Why does Ford need guide pins for their badges? Is it really that hard to get them straight during assembly? I would think a person could get them straight without much trouble and the most basic of “robots” could nail it 100% of the time.

I would much prefer to completely remove them along with the 3rd brake light and antennae like forensicsteve did. But there is no way my car is coming down for paint.

And there is no way I can tape them off and paint them on the car. I have horrible paint luck. I would probably end up getting overspray in the glove box!:happyhapp

As far as removing the adhesive goes I have been using 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner #08984. This stuff ROCKS!!! The 3M cleaner eats Goo Gone for breakfast!
