Question for experts

I am in the process of rebuilding the engine of a 1966 Mustang 6 cy 200ci. The head has been gone through by a local engine shop. They give me a complete gasket set for the engine. It is made by Engine tech. It has been several years since I have replaced a head gasket.
Should I use some sort of sealer on the gasket/head and or block.
Something like Hylomar blue? Or just put the gasket on and torque to spec?

Thanks
Mark

The only thing ( and this is optional) that I would put on the head gasket is head gasket spray. An aluminum paint or the local parts store will sell a Permatex Copper head gasket sealer.

Again, this is all in my opinion optional.
Just make sure you follow the torque specs and you do it in stages and in the correct order on every stage.

Good luck :)

Although Hylomar has its place, it is not intended for head gaskets. The only time I have used anything on a head gasket is on 75-year-old engines with fairly wimpy head bolts. By the 60s engines and head gaskets were designed with enough clamping force from the head bolts that no sprays or any other glop was needed. I always install them as they come out of the box.

I thought I heard that the 6 cyl motors came from the factory with no head gasket. Is that true?

I don't know of any engine with bolt-on heads that doesn't also use a head gasket.

No exhaust manifold gasket possibly. The 289s didn't have gaskets on the exhaust manifold from the factory; I don't know for certain about the 6s.

I am going to put it on straight out of the box. Will let all know how it went. Painted the block and engine bay. Looks great will post pics when back together. Hopefully this weekend.
Thanks for the great advice.

The factory Boss 429's didn't use a head gasket, only o-rings.
