Help! Is My Battery Officially Dead?

851 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  pmr2000
I've been having this problem with a dead battery for a couple of weeks now. Found a 3 amp draw that shouldn't be. Now, the 3 amp draw won't come back (so I can fix it) after removing and reinserting the #59 fuse, but the battery is still going dead all the time.
I put a full charge on it yesterday with a new battery charger I just bought and did not reconnect the ground terminal until this morning.
The battery was dead! Yesterday when I charged it, the charger said "full".
The battery is only a year and a half old. Is it possible I need a new battery?

I'm still on my factory battery and going on 3 1/2 years.

If I were you, i'd make sure i'm getting a damn good connection when you put the battery terminals back on. You can have them on there and think you're getting a good connection but you really have to clean them off good and cinch down on them to make the proper connection.

Either that or you've got a bum battery.

Check to make sure you have a good ground but sounds like you may have a dead cell or two.
Or check is something is draining the battery, if you have any aftermarket wiring check that first.

A simple ammeter from Sears or Home Depot ($10) can be used to test, connect between the negative of the battery and a ground with the car off. Anything more than .04 amps is probably a drain, above what the cpu and radio memory would need.
