Help w/using engine hoist

I was curious where most people hook up the chain on the engine to hoist there engine.I saw a piece on Summit that attaches to the lower intake manifold. That just does not seem safe. All that weight being lifted by the intake?Sounds very scary.

lifted my engine out with tranny on, tight fit but came out. i also made a piece that went on top so the chains didn;t come across and bust stuff up . got a piece of 1in thick steel , 2 feet long and cut a hole on each side for the manifold to hook to and 1 i the middle to hoist .. if u need a pic i might be able to find the rig somewhere tomorrow and take a pic. hope this will help

A pic would be great.Did you lift all that weight by the intake.Youre MUCH more brave than I am.
The threads in the head are cast iron but I still wouldnt lift it by the intake. What I did was use 1 bolt in the front of one head where the accessories go and 1 bolt in the back the other head.
my stang had hooks on the header bolts where it bolts the the head , thats what i lifted by one on each side. if you don;t have that maybe make a set one on each side . only a bit of scrap metal and drill. i'm a backyard mechanic why spend money when its proble easier just to make it. i will post a pic tomorow i think u'll understand it quick what im saying.
Just lift it by the heads. If you dont have the brackets, then just put a bolt threw the chain and into the head.
i like to run a chain acrossed to back of the heads and for the front i started useing a nylon tie down strap around the water pump and hook the chain and the tie down to my hoist

When I go to salvage yards I usually take them off of cars, usually they dont' charge me anything for them.
