My '89 LX 5.0 tranny seems to be having trouble getting going in the morning. It doesn't want to engage when 1st starting out. Once I get it rolling, it seems to be normal. With 170K plus, I'm assuming a rebuild is in the cards. Can I do anything to forestall this?

have you checked the fluid? if there isnt enough it could cause that

With 170000 miles on it, it's most likely tired. No way around that, in fact that's exceptional mileage if it's never been rebuilt.

What's happening is it's gotten worn clutches, and after it's sit overnight the fluid has drained to the pan. When you start out, there's a gap between the clutches and once you get the fluid in there it's fine. Revving it up gets additional fluid pressure in there that fills the gap.
