Hi Everyone,

I have not been on this forum for quite sometime, but have found
out over ther years the people here are very helpful.

I am looking to replace my cigarette lighter. It has never worked and is not even hooked up. I have been searching for a diagram on how it should look but unable to find one.

I have a 1987 gt convertible with the cig lighter in the center console. I have removed the console and unhooked the side mirror
harness. There a 2 other harnesses there and I am not sure what they are for either as they are not attached to anything. Knowing this would be great to know too.

So my question is, Anyone know how this cigarette lighter is installed as far as getting power to it? and what exactly are the 2 harnesses I mentioned above for? Any images or diagrams would be great as well as any other info on this.

Thanks for your time,

Sabrina

The fuse is not blown it is fine. The lighter housing and element are there, but the wires to the lighter are not there. I need to see how and what I hook it up too.

There are 3 clip harnesses, 1 is for the side mirrors which I know because I had to unplug it, and 2 others not hooked up to anything at the moment. I hope one is for the lighter. If so I need the wiring from the lighter housing to the clip harness.

If it is not the way it hooks up then I need to know how it is suppose to. I would also like to know what the other harness clips are for.

I can not for the life of me find an image of this online. I do thank you for the link, as of course I have other problems with this old ride. LOL

Anyone one else care to help...:bigthumbsup

if you have a test light check to see if the wires are hot..the cig. lighter wires should be hot all the time since you can use your lighter/other device without the key being in the on position.

the other clips might be for lumbar support? i cant remember if that goes under the center console or just under the carpet to the side

That is a simple wiring setup. Just run a fused circuit (7 amp) straight from the hot side of the starter solenoid. Then ground the lighter housing right to the trans hump if old ground is missing.

I was thinking about what your other harnesses could be for and I remembered the little light under the ashtray. That could be one of them. If you still hadn't gotten an answer by this weekend, I'll try to pull my console and get some pics of the set up for you.

Here's a wire diagram.

I'm in the process of completing a make over on the interior and think I know what your referencing about the two other wire circuits under the dash. If I am not mistaken there is a parking brake switch with wires, Cig lighter with wires and a light with wires.

Attached is 93 wiring schematic for the Horn/Cig lighter. This can tell you what color the wires are. Ford was pretty good about keeping up the same colors for wiring through the years so they should match up with your 87.

I've also attached a pic from my 1990 LX when I first began my project. I have everything out of the inside, but the wires remain. You might be able to zoom in and reference if needed.

Good luck on finding a new cig lighter. Something to think about, if you don't smoke and want to "modernize" the Cig lighter to something that is more functional like a phone charger etc. . . then I would look at your local gadget shops like best buy, radio shack, circuit city, etc and see what you might be able to modify into your console. This is coming from a guy who is almost finished with installing a 2005 dash, steering column, center console with custom seats and door panels into a 1990 Mustang convertible, ha ha. I didn't even mention my plans for an IPad 2 to take the place of the radio.

Have fun and best of luck.

Semper Fi,
John
