Hey guys, I've been looking for a set of GT500 mufflers for my 2013 GT. I finally found some for a great price last night on ebay. 160.00$ A steal right? Well I was so excited at the price and looking up the part number that I didn't think to read the description. I have a concern. I will post a link also. http://www.ebay.com/itm/281529251243...:MEBIDX:

IT It says that something "fell into one muffler" so it rattles obviously i need to get it out. I am concerned if it is something inside thats broken.... How could it be affected? Also, It stated two of the hanger were cut. Is that an issue? Can I reuse my hangers, and not worry about it? Im scared that I got too happy and bought a **** product... Please any info will be awesome. I bought them for a christmas present, and want them on the car before xmas day.

thanks in advance
Steve

UPDATE!!

I got the mufflers in. The hangers were cut but can be fixed for under 30$ and the piece that fell into it was a piece of the cut hanger. telescoping magnet got it right out! off to powdercoat, and muffler shop monday!

Baffles in the muffler may make it difficult to extract, whatever might be in there, assuming that it's still loose. If you are good at sound and angling the muffler, and know what the cross section of the muffler is from the manufacturer (some sort of internal diagram), you may be able to get it out. If it's small, that is.... if it's something big, it might disturb the exhaust flow. Depends upon what fell inside. Generally mufflers (at least newish ones) don't fall apart on the inside unless serious rust has broken something loose inside, if not stainless steel on the inside.

The link does not work. I agree with the post above about the rattling sound etc. But as far as the cut hangars, I believe they are typically welded onto the shell of the muffler. So yes you need the hangars. You will likely have to weld some new hangars on.

Sorry but you kind of got what you paid for.

Ya your going to need those hangars. Take it to a muffler shop and have them install them and weld you on some hangars at the same time, that way you can kill two birds with one stone. I don't remember if the hangars on my 11 were angled or straight. If they are straight and you can weld, then it shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise I would go the muffler shop route.

Can't you just cut them open, take out whatever is rattling, and then seal them shut again?

Yes I guess you could cut them open and then use muffler tape and bandage them up. Or weld some new sheet metal on but that seems like it would be time consuming and not last very long.

What about snaking a magnet in there?

Move on and find a better pair.
yeah, that's what I was thinking too -- is $160 really that great of a price, to deal with all those problems? Aren't they normally something like $300 retail?

OP made it sound like he had already bought them. So he needs to try and make them work or sell them to somebody else I guess. Or hang them up on the wall like a pair of trophies and start shopping again patiently.

thanks man. very helpful. I'll see if i can find a diagram. they came with a waranty, so if they are broken on the inside I'll be returning them for sure

Steveland15 you have me confused. Your first post indicated that you got them from ebay, there was a rattle, and the hangars were cut off. The ebay link did not work for me.

Now you tell us that they have a warranty. But I was under the impression you bought them used so I am not sure the warranty can transfer to you and not sure if warranty is still good if the mufflers have been altered by cutting off a hangar or two.

Then you show us a picture of mufflers with hangars on them? Am I seeing that one of the forward hangars are cut off on each muffler? Sorry I just don't remember how my GT500 axlebacks have for hangars.

Just trying to understand.

From looking at the picture, one of the rear hangers on each muffler was cut off. Your factory mufflers should use the same hangers if you still have them so just get one of them taken off and re-welded to the GT 500 mufflers.

As far as the noise inside, these mufflers are supposedly chambered ones so one of the baffles inside may have broke loose from whatever fell on the muffler.

You can find these mufflers used a lot of times on the for sale sections of most of the Mustang forums or some online places still have them new for around $319. I think latemodelrestoration.com sells them for this price. Good luck. These are great sounding mufflers and is what I run on my 14 GT.

thanks for the reply. I did buy them on ebay. I think ebay is like giving a warranty or he is offering some kind of warranty in case something doesnt work. I am not too sure, It says "warranty: YES" so idk what type of warranty or how it has one.

If you look at the picture The left muffler has the left hanger cut off. While on the right muffler the far right hanger was cut off.

here is what they should look like I believe
