Horrible engine sound - Please help!

Hello,

I drove my car home with no issues last night and no engine sounds at all. This morning when I started the engine, there was a horrible sound! It sounded like a rock or a marble bouncing and tumbling around inside my engine! I turned it off real quick, and then started it again with the same sound present. I let it run for a few seconds (probably no more than 30) when I opened the hood to see if anything was visibly wrong – but there wasn’t. I didn’t have much time to look into it because I had to go to work. I am not driving it now, it is parked until I figure out what the problem is.

Does anyone POSSIBLY have any reasoning for the cause of the sound? It is hard to tell where the sound was coming from – it sounded like it was coming from all over the engine.
Should I pull off the belt and run it to see if the noise is still there? I guess that would eliminate quite a few things?

I really appreciate any feedback or suggestions on this ASAP.

Thank you very much!

does it sound like a tap or a tick noise? that could be a valve, or your injectors might be loud
It actually sounds like a loose bolt floating around inside. There really was not any rhythm to it at all...

There isn't a whole lot of info to go on here, gonna need something more to help you pinpoint it. I would start by checking the compression and leakdown, read the plugs, and change the oil, see if there are any pieces of metal in the oil. The noise you describe could be a number of things from something minor like an accessory worn out or something major like internal damage to the engine. You're going to have to do some diagnostics...

I would do like you said , remove the belt and listen to the motor. Many idler pullies make a blown motor sound
OK - so I started the engine yesterday and the sound was still there - but not as bad. I ran for a few seconds and turned it off.

I removed the belt and started it again - this time there was no sound!

So the sound is not coming from inside the engine....
Where could it be coming from? Did not sound like alternator.
Could it be the water pump bearings or something? That has a pully in front...

Thank you!

...I also put the belt back on, restarted the engine and the sound went away after a little while. I let it run for about 5 minutes and the sound was totally gone at idle RPMs....this one has me stumped. If it is the water pump, seems easy to change out hopefully since it is right up front..?
Ir it is the water pump there are four bolts (10mm) to take off the pulley, there are also four 10mm bolts holding it to the block. Chances are that you will need a rubber mallet to knock it loose.
Argh - I have to wait until the sound comes back now... Just went out and started it again and the sound was still not there. If it happens to be the water pump, is it bad to drive it with it making that noise? Like if I drive it to work tomorrow with no issues, and it starts making noises again on my way home....will it break anything?

most of the time it is the small pullies. with the belt off spin the small ones , and the ac pully spin that one also. if it was the water pump you would be able to move the pully and feel play. no play it should be good
Ok cool - I will check the pullies to see if they make noise individually. I spun a few of them when I had the belt off the first time, but nothing. The water pump is not leaking or anything, so it may not be that... I drove about 20 miles today and didnt hear any weird noises - I have no idea what to think now... argh!

Allright.... I thnk I may have the culprit..

The main drive/crankshaft pully is REALLY wobbly, so wobbly that the belt wont fully seat on it. It is half riding on the edge. Im lucky to have got back and forth to work probably...

So, is the pully loose, broke or ???
Is it a pain to replace? Not sure how this happened?

Thanks!

I got the pulley from Autozone for $60 - and renting the puller for free.

Now the hard part...how do I take off the bolt?!
Its an automatic transmission
I cannot get an impact gun in there - not enough room
Impact wrench doesnt seem to have enough power

The pulley turns every time I try and remove the bolt - how do I stop the pulley from turning?

Forget putting the wrench on it and bumping the engine - way too risky...

I heard there may be a grommet on the tranny that I can pull out and stich a screwdriver in to keep the crank from turning, but where is it located?

Thanks!

try putting the belt on first, then break the bolt free....

What helped me was a two foot breaker bar and an impact socket put it on and used used a steel hammer to tap the end of bar the shock it loose enough to get with a ratchet.
