I have one, the only problem is when its hot out the temp goes all the way up to maybe 200* before the fan kicks on. A tuner will fix that. Its a cheap $10 mod, and in theroy it works. I wouldn't go 160* though, an engine needs to be certain temp. to maintain good wear. I would love to see some dyno results of different thermostats.

What brand did you order? Mr. Gaskets are supposed to be very good at opening fully and staying open at their advertised 180* temp.

Most parts store stats have a range listed for them. A typical 180* stat is usually listed as 180*-195*. They typically start opening at 180* and are fully open by 195* Mine runs dead on at 195* fully warmed up, which is just about right for a fuelie 5.0 The factory stat is listed as a 190*, but that is only the opening temp, they usually are not fully open until 205* at least.

IMHO, a carbed car would benefit more from a true 180* stat like the Mr. Gasket, because a fuelie needs to hit 172* to go into closed loop, and 180* dead on is a little too close to that for me.

once again, i hate the factory instruments.

You cannot run a 160 with EFI. 180 is as cool as you can go.

I use the Mr. Gasket 180 and a Mr. Gasket fan control. :smoke:

i wanna know why you can run 160* thermostat in a eft 5.0 i run one with my alumium headed motor. Only difference in a 160* and a 180* is the thermostat opens sooner. But why cant you run one? thats what i wanna know. Im sure you can run anything you want. Id rather have a 160* in mine so it opens sooner then a 180* with a set of aluminum head so i dont melt them or blow them woulnt you? cause from what i remember in school water boils at 212* am i right? so woulnt it be smarter to run a 160* then a 180* cause 180* seems like its hotter then 160* to me. just cause you put a 160* thermostat in your car dont mean the water temp wont reach 180* or 195* etc it just opens it sooner thats all. So you stick with your 180*s, 190*s or whatever ill stick with my 160* on those hot summer days so i dont warp my aluminum head from overheating them. have a nice day

Without going into a lengthy explanation of the EFI ignition system, the short version is that your cars sensors will be continually trying to warm up the car. You will get a rich mixter below about 170. Poor fuel milage and various problems with your tune will surface.

That said, the HOTTER you run the motor the more efficient it will be. That means it will make more HORSEPOWER! It is the intake charge that needs cold air.

To answer your last post Killamuh50 is I have a lot of work done to my motor and I hade a 180* termo in my car and blew all my water pump gaskets. And yes a 160* will open sooner than 180* and thst is good for my car and I am sure my car will rech 180* but if 160 opens sooner it is good for me. No more replacing gaskets
