First I am going to say I love the new 5.0!! It is extremely fun to drive. My one problem so far is I am kind of a perfectionist when it come to the appearance department and my vehicles. When I started to looking at the new Mustangs, it was always during the day and sunny out. I did not notice any problems in the appearance (of course, I was falling in love as well and who notices problems during the honeymoon phase?)

Once I got it home and put it in the garage, I could not beleive the level of orange peel that is in the paint. It almost seems unaccaptable to me the amount that is there. It is now to the point since I know it is so bad, depending on which way I look at it outside, I can see the orange peel in the sun. Has anyone else noticed this amount of orange peel? Is this common on our cars, or am I seeing some sort of defect with mine?

the "orange peel" is just a way to describe the texturing in the paint as it can resemble an orange peel. most of the new 5.0s have this i noticed but it doesnt bother me; im not too anal as this car is a daily driver, not a show car but to each his own. the OP can do some sanding and other detail work to change that.

I don't think I've ever seen a factory paint job on a car under $100K that didn't have orange peel.

As I've understood it, getting rid of orange peel pretty much requires color sanding and buffing/polishing and ends up adding a lot of time/effort to painting the car.

yeah i saw it on all the cars ford has been doing. More so on the stangs the past 3 model years. I am a painter for my 2nd job(not enough money in it for the economy at the moment) The orange peel effect is more so noticeable on the lighter color cars. Much less on the black and kona blue. I have yet to see the dark reds. or red candy

The peel in that picture does look pretty heavy. About as heavy as my '07 F150 - which I am not too happy about.

I've thought of wet sanding the clear, but I don't know how heavy the clear is, so I don't want to take a chance of sanding through it, since it doesn't appear to be too thick.

However, the peel in that pic and my truck are like lakes of glass compared to the '72 stang we bought last year. That color sanding project is currently in process.

Both of my new Fords have orange peel. Both are blue: Mustang = Kona Blue, F-150=Midnight Blue. The qaulity of Ford's paint has gone down considerably in the past few years it seems.

I also have a 2010 Chrysler 300C in brilliant (metallic) black and the paint job is virtually flawless.

That looks just like a newer black Hyundai I was sitting right next to the other day thinking to myself is that a factory paint job or Macco, looked bad for factory , IMO.

My red candy GT has a lot of orange peel. I've just learned to accept it. I imagine fixing it would be an expensive repainting job. The car still looks sharp - only a problem if you look closely.

I guess it is just going to be something to live with. I was just surprised at how noticible it was. My last Mustang was a black 2006 and it looked like a mirror - there was no noticable orange peel at all. Mine looks just as heavy if not heavier than the picture 2001gt310 posted.

Too funny, considering their TV commercial where they advertise their paint job to be equal to or better than a Mercedes!

If you're properly restoring a late '60s Mopar the paint will have heavy orange peel. :winks

So I got the best pictures I could of my paint. You can see in the reflection how much peel there is. I was looking at my wifes Alpine Gray VW Tiguan and there is some orange peel in it, but I am not sure if it is really less or just looks like less because of the color. I was also looking at my 2010 Taurus (Company Car) and could not really see any peel, but it is ingot silver so I think it may be because of the color.

Anywho, I guess I should probably not worry about it as I doubt anyone other than someone as crazy as me would probably even notice or comment on it.
