Some [email protected]%$ at the local parts store told my 89 needed iron gear; I guess you could say stupid me as well for beleaving it. Anyway I'm gotta change it to steel. What equipment do I need to get a hold of to get it off?

Nevermind I midas well just get a another distributor assy it's only 30 bucks more with core.

They sometimes will come right off, sometimes they have to be pressed off. If you want to try it yourself, you knock the roll pin out of it and see if it comes off. If not, you could try some heat from a torch to expand it enough so it'll come off and the same thing if you put on the other, then put the roll pin back in. If it doesn't budge, even with heat, don't force it and take it to a machine shop where they'll press the old off and press the new on.

When I got my new MSD it had the iron gear on it and I had to have it changed. The instructions gave a very tight tolerance for the placement of the gear on the shaft and I didn't want to screw it up so I took it to a local machine shop where they charged me $25 to change it.
Since the gear costs $23.00 And the machine shop where wants about $20.00 I'll just take the distributor off and take the core to the parts store I'll be outta pocket about 10 more than buying a gear and distributor but I'll have the right gear and a fresh distributor even though the one thats on now is pretty new. I diffently don't want the machine shop to screw up on the gear. If wish I still lived in GA I know people do most car stuff cheap and get it done right people here are like highschool shop students.
