I Installed new distributor. What can be wrong?

Hey evryone, on a 92 lx 5.0, I installed a brand new pro billet dis by msd. It is the good one with the tfi mounted on. This is how I installed it just like ive installed it many other times on the 94

I put my finger on the number 1 spark plug hole and rotate the crank until its on tdc 0 degrees on the compression stroke. Then I toss in the distributor with the rotor tip pointing on the number 1 spark plug then wherever it lines up in the cap thats where i set my number 1 spark wire and follow the firing order.

Basicaly when we try to start the car, it feels like it wants to fire up, random loud popping but the car im sure drowned with fuel because when i removed the spark plug it seemed wet and also really smelled like raw unburned fuel. Even when starting the car you can smell it.

Thanks for any help guys

Try turning the dizzy a little, also. Check your firing order.

Also the number one spot should be close the 12oclock.
hmm, thanks alot 89, i guess thats where my problem is, on this one its about at 9 oclock, i guess thats the problem, thats where i have it set at on my 94 but i guess ill try it out and get back with you guys tommorow. then again thanks 89.
if you have #1 at tdc on compression stroke and the pointer is lined up with 0 on the balancer it does not matter where the rotor points. as long as you start there with #1 plug wire and go CCW.
Alright thanks alot guys, ill try it out tommorow morning.
Having the rotor point at 12 is for ease of adjustment. Other wise, you may run into the TFI hitting the t stat housing while trying to adjust. The hall effect sensor and the number dedicated spot on the reluctor needs to be close, if the rotor is pointing at 9, the the Dizzy has to be turned way around CCW to get the Halleffect sensor in place. Which it needs to be to the left of the number spark post. SN95's are different as the TFI is remote mounted.

That isn't true with a multiport EFI system.

One vane on the reluctor in the distributor is a different size than the rest. That vane tells the computer where number 1 is, and where all the rest of the cylinders are. This means plug wire one has to be in a special sport, and the distributor lined up so the different size vane in crossing the sensor.

In a factory distributor, which are just as good as a billet distributor up to 8000 RPM or more, the cap is marked for number 1. When you put 1 in that marked sport then the reluctor is lined up properly and the computer knows what cylinder the engine is on at any moment.

I hope the Mallory has a similar OEM compatible pick up that tells the EFI system where one is, and is marked to put one at the correct spot.

In an EFI system with port injection IT MATTERS where 1 is placed and how the distributor is dropped in. The distributor should be centered on plug one's terminal when the damper is about 20 degrees before TDC. That centers the rotor to the terminal in the advance range the engine uses.

Just to add what tom has said, the small spot on the reluctor, is what sends a smaller PIP signal, this also tells the ECM to fire the number one injector, it will then make the cycle, and start back at one again when the Small PiP signal is received by the ECM.

And, if you can put the number one plug at 9 and still get it timed right, your a better man than I am. It will be to far advanced, and you won't have the adjustment to retard it.

just incase u may not know 5l and 5.0 Ho have different firing orders
Hey evryone, Thanks alot and I really appreciate all the info. I got it started yesterday, stupid mistake that my friend made was that 1, he had the firing order clockwise and not counter clockwise. I think ill tell him to make an account on this forum. I had reinstalled the distirbutor the right way but i had his word on the cap. I guess I wont trust him next time. Probably wont waste a trip and gas.
