In this thread: New job in Michigan; Michiganites roll call

So I will very soon be relocating to Kalamazoo, MI to be a scientist for the Pfizer Animal Health corporate machine.

What makes me excited:
1. well new job, and twice the salary
2. Michigan=Dearborn=Ford (I want to get a pic of my Mustang taken in front of the plant, even though it is a San Jose car)
3. Michigan is much more populated than Iowa (right?) and as such I'm hoping there's a lot more of you good folks whom I'll be in vicinity to.

So if you're from Michigan, Ohio, or Indiana, or northern Illinois, sound off here. Kzoo is in deep southwest Michigan.

What makes me sad:
1. I'm leaving all my family behind in Iowa. My wife leaves her family behind in Minneapolis.

2. And for the biggest problem (which seriously kind of depresses me a little): we'll be living in a temporary apartment for a year until we can buy a property (which will contain my garagemahal). In the mean time, I have no idea what I'm going to do with my Mustang (or my jet ski), but whatever the solution is, it almost certainly means I'll go an entire year without working on it.

I've worked on it faithfully several days a week for the last three years and is one of my most favorite things in the world to do. So to take a year sabbatical makes my knuckles, tools, and cursing sad :(

So besides letting me know if you're close, if you have any suggestions or bright ideas I'm all ears. I'll give you some free Viagra in return :laughlitt

(Pfizer makes Viagra for those who don't get it)

I live in michigan....not lower though...so im not close at all..anyway..almost done painting my 66. Welcome to michigan. rent a large storage space and work on it in there.
Sell the jet ski and buy a snowmobile.

Oh, and Pop is soda, a soda is ice cream in a pop.

When people ask you where you live it's customary to hold up your left hand and point with your right.

Good to know, because I'm on the 'pop' side of the fence.

Shouldn't it be the right hand and pointing with the left? I've got that part down pretty good now, but I had a friend in college from Detroit who always did the hand trick.

Nah, right hand is for the UP, you hold it sideways with your thumb down and your pinky up.
Lizer, I can understand your sadness. Working on my cars are my thereapy. Its a passion. Its how I forget about the corporate grind, politics, and extensive travel. its what i look forward to when returning back to the states every month.

I've always said if I could pay my bills and retire as planned by restoring mustangs, I would quite my job of 29 years tomorrow.

Michigan is beautiful. Cold, but beautiful. The exception being Detroit which is more like the "armpit" of the USA. Football has been lack luster since Lloyd Carr left. Michigan was even "property" of Jim tressel for several years till he fell on his sword this year.

Forget about the remote garage. They just dont work the same and you find yourself feeling uneasy because its remote and that someone may someday break in and steal you blind.

Something you should think about is "what kind of apartment" you choose to rent. You dont have to live in a gated apartment complex just because you can. You should look for apartments that actually have individual 1-1/2 car garages. They do exist around here. For that matter, given the housing market condition, you could find a small brick ranch home to rent with an attached garage for about the same money as a gated apartment.

Be flexible, Remember, its only temporary.

Hey Lizard Brains,

Do I really need to post on this thread?
You do muffles, because I'm going to move your pale white car over and park mine next to it.

RF--I see you're 4.5 hrs from Kzoo and on the way to piggly's house. Since I plan to make visits to Pud eater I'll have to try to swing by your way.

Are you talking about personal storage for remote garages? We did look at some complexes with garages but they either had no vacancies or were ludicrously expensive. We actually ended up signing for a cheap place when we were up for a pre-acceptance visit a few weeks ago. We wanted some place as cheap as possible--but livable and not in the ghetto--so we could finish saving up for a downpayment and get into a house asap. The more expensive the apartment we got, the longer we would have to stay there as we'd be saving less. We did look at some houses, but they were either in the ghetto, the landlord didn't want to wait until sept (I was like wtf, it's ONE month away), or they were prohibitively pricey.

This all depends on if the moving company will even put my Mustang on the truck when they move us out. If not then it makes my problem really easy and I'll just keep it where it is and have to rent a truck and trailer later and move my car and shop out when we buy property. I didn't prefer that as my first option because it was going to be a larger hassle, though it might end up being cheaper than paying $120-150 storage every month for a year.

Woodward Dream Cruise is Aug 20th.
I realized I didn't state this earlier...I will be going out there on Sept 4.

Another thing to add to the 'depressing' pile is living in a bare apartment without the wife until we get everything moved out. At least I'll have my cat, 42" flat screen, piano, and xbox...the main necessities besides the lady.

pud eater? at least i am not a pickle kisser like you ) I saw that your woman was a little upset that you hadn't invited her to move with you.

At least you'll have warm feet in the Michigan winter with a pair of her hand stitched, argyle, lamb-hair socks.....fact.

In Kzoo the winters are apparently nicer than Iowa winters, as reported to me by the people Pfizer relocated there from Iowa.

please just shut up.)
I lived in an apartment complex in desmoines when I was going to school and I rented a garage at the complex. it was basically a 2 car garage. it was supposed to be for 2 people but I was the only occupant it only had one outlet, the one for the garage door opener but I used that for a trouble light and even ran my little portable air compressor off it. I pulled the engine, detailed the engine compartment and later swapped intake manifolds on it, did all kinds of stuff to it during those 3.5 years I lived there. like someone said look for a place that meets your needs and ask the manager if they allow working on cars in the garage you might get lucky like I did.

Mccance I've seen pictures of a shop your car sits in now. If that's your shop then I commend you, because it's pretty awesome.

You probably know Dr. Victora, the veterinarian in town. His daughter was one of my best friends in college. Every time I drive by atlantic on I-80 I think, 'Hi Victora's and Mccance...'

Lizer, sorry for the late reply but I just managed to make it back to the good ole USA on monday.

I can understand your situation. The more you save on rent, the sooner you get into a house. It makes perfect logic financially. I can remember those earlier days when my wife and I lived in an apartment. Not at all fun. As a matter of fact, we lived in an apartment in '04 for 10 months while we had this house built. It was like living in a closet. But I managed.

If you ever make it down this way on I-75 on your way to Pig's, stop by. I'm 10 minutes off the interstate just south of Dayton. I'd love to show off my rides not to mention I just picked up a new project to start later this winter (69 Mach 1) It will be another 3 year project like my 68 fastback. This will (hopefully) complete my stable.

I have 3 car garage that houses my 2 rides plus my tools and my HD. My wife (bless her) parks outside with me and without much complaining leaving the garage all to my toys and my tools. I have promised her to have a remote starter installed on her car so she can manage the winter a little better this year. (I say that every year but never seem to get it done)

While your at it, mark your calander for the "All Ford Swap Meet" in Columbus Ohio on thanksgiving weekend. You can find anything and everything for your mustang. I take a list every time I go and never leave without finding the stuff (original) I need. Its a candy store

You know, you and "Pig" need to bury the hatchet or something. I've talked to pig on the phone before and he really is a good ol' boy with a huge passion for mustangs. Something that many of us do have in common. He may or may not have your education or intelect, but he is still a person and he like the rest of us puts his pants on one leg at a time. I dont know him well but I can tell you he gets up everyday and goes to work, Pays his taxes like most of us do, and what our government does'nt take, he puts in his car after taking care of his family. Which more than I can say for those with their hand out. I hope to meet him in person some day. Who know's, I may need his help with something which I am certain he would do without question. I dont know if he has his motor running yet and I use to tease him about all the while Thinking he might call me to come down and help him get it fired off.

Anyway, you guy's are both decent people in spite of anyones opinion. Although we are all different in some way. We do share a common passion. You like everyone else on this forum are welcome to my house anytime. (As long as i'm in the country). Good luck with your move and enjoy Michigan. Its beautiful further up the state.

Good to know about the swap meet in Columbus, RF! I don't know if we'll be traveling anywhere for Thanksgiving, but in the event that we're not, that's something I'll try to do.

I appreciate the offer for the stable viewing and will take you up on it someday, and someday soon hopefully.

I'll tell you something about Pig. Even though he is 'special,' often puts his shoes on the wrong feet and needs someone to wipe for him  there isn't a single person I text more, have more facebook exchanges with, or talk on the phone with more than piggly. It's a damn shame we don't live closer because we'd be inseparable best friends if it were the case...my wife already thinks we're gay for each other. So the point I'm trying to make is there isn't anything remotely close to a hatchet here. We're really good friends and love to give each other sh1t, and what ends our phone conversations is who's battery dies first. So I'm pretty stoked about only being 5.5 hrs away from Amelia because I planning on making that trip soon after I get into Kzoo. Regardless of all that crap I give him (none of it is ever serious) he is a really awesome person with a lot of heart and would do anything to help somebody.

RF - this is, I hate to admit it, cordially true. I do have a game i like to play and that is to make Lizer leave messages on my "fat, hick, m effin voice mail" all the time because it really burns him up and gets him fired up. I do that on purpose. I think I have talked to this kid, at least, 2 hours at a time, on average, per phone call. He's is like talking to grass, but I like grass so I deal with it. I do love this comment "he may not be as educated or have the same intellect"), I am not. Lizer will research something until his internet gets sore to find the best and get to the bottom line, Im more of a wing it and learn by error. This, a lot of time, cost me a lot of money and causes me to have to back track 15 times, but hell I have fun. RF, Lizer, and Pig need to hit up a regional show at some point, I think we would all have a killer time.

I love you guys - not in a gay way, and Josh's wife thinks me and him are gay to the point she cuts him out of her Facebook pictures. FOR THE WIN!!!!!!

You guys are too funny. Love the banter between buddies
Sorry Pig, i was not aware you and Lizer were somewhat "close". Come to think of it, you guys do carry on back and forth as if you were involved with one another.

Hey Pig, Maybe I can convince you and Lizer to come to the "Pumpkin Run" this October at the Clermont County fairgrounds (outside Cincinnati). It's in your back yard dude. Last year they had over 3,500 cars that are no older than 1970. Some really beautiful rides are always there. I plan to be there with one or both of my stangs.

It runs 9-30, 10-01, 10-02.

You guy's ought to think about it.
