Hey guys haven't posted in awhile but I have a problem that's been bugging at me. I am debating whether or not to go ahead and invest in a handheld tuner for my mustang, specifically the SCT tuner on americanmuscle for an 03 Mustang GT... Anybody with experience have any advice/pointers/things I should know/things I can do?

You will gain some HP, and help with any mods you do in the future, seems like too much of an expense but it is worth it.
You will be able to adjust for say, timing advance, new gears, tire sizes, exhaust, cams, intakes, SCs, etc, etc.

As your car is right now, with not many mods, you can adjust for that OR xpipe you have in there (needs some parameter changes to compensate for the lack of cats).

YES GO FOR IT!!

Get AmericanMuscle's SCT + Bama's free tunes for life. (Myself, I wish I could, AM don't serve internationally).

I dyno tuned my pony at a local shop and gained 11 rwhp and 29 rwtq (mods at sig.). totally feels like a new car.

I suggest getting whatever mods you plan to get (cai tb plenum exhaust..etc) THEN get the tune to get the most of the mods.

Dollar for Dollar, the SCT handheld tuner with free custom tunes for life from Bama Performance is the best deal out there!

This will greatly improve the car with what it has installed on it now(and turn off that CEL if you are not running MIL eliminators) and be a vital tool for any future modifications!

You can't get a better deal than this!:bigthumbsup

Thanks everyone I think I am definitely going to save up for one then, once I get my JLT CAI sounds like the general consensus is it is a great investment and one that is worth it in the long run getting the most performance out of my car. Also just a side note for those of you with experience how will my car's computer/tuner know what fuel/air ratio to give, or compensate, with whatever mods I have to prevent it from running too "rich or lean" or whatever (I've heard these terms used a lot with intake upgrades, not to sure if I should be concerned) Will a dyno tune be required?

A dyno tune is not required if you get a handheld tuner with free custom tunes. Our email tunes, because of our experience with late model mustangs, are sometimes just as accurate, if not more accurate than a dyno tune. You'll notice that all of the top mustang dyno-tuners in the world also sell mail-order tunes. Go with the company that makes you feel the most comfortable :bigthumbsup

In regards to your question....

Your idle and part throttle air/fuel ratio is controlled by your front oxygen sensors and they will make sure that you're running the proper A/F ratio during those times. If not, a CEL will illuminate that you are either running lean or rich and what bank of cylinders is effected. Since this car doesn't have a factory wideband sensor, the only way to accurately test your A/F ratio at wide open throttle(WOT) would be to strap it down on a dyno and run it with a wideband or tailpipe sniffer.

Our calibrations for your car have been tested and developed in-house on our fleet of mustangs and we put all of our tunes through street/dyno and track-testing before they are released to the public. We also get hundreds of datalogs and dyno results each week from customers all over the world, so that we have a good idea of how consistent and safely our tunes are running.

I promise that you would be very happy with purchasing a hand-held tuner, but if you have any other questions or concerns, please give the pros at Bama a call at the number and during the hours listed in my signature.

I heard on another board that the SCT tuner can only used a certain number of time before it "locks up" and must be sent back to SCT to be reset before it can be used again. Is this true?

Yes, it can be mated/unmated up to 5 times before it has to be reset by the manufacturer.
