I recently bought a 66 coupe. Vin # shows it to be an "A" code 289. One of the inner front fenders is stamped with the same vin and it's a 4bbl, so I never really investigated beyond that. Recently my fuel pump (I think it's that) went out, and last night I was scoping out the pump and preparing to remove it when I noticed a tag. The tag is silver with red, with several blanks. The only two that I can see that are stamped are "ENGINE" which looks to be stamped "559" and "CODE" which is stamped "K". The tag is sorta sandwiched between engine and trans near the where the exhaust ties to the manifold. It also has blanks for "CYLINDER SIZE" AND "MAIN SIZE" and the bottom of the tag says "REMANUFACTURED BY NATIONAL ???" What does it mean?

The same block was used for a "K" code as for a regular 289. The real difference is in the cylinder heads (they would have a cast number of usually 19 or 21 on the front lower corner drivers side and on the back corner of the passenger side) and would have solid lifters, differtnt pistons, cam. dual point mechanical advance distributer, etc. You can go to www.hipomustang.com and find a wealth of infromation about what makes a "K" code.
